I bought two crib mattresses off of Craig's List (one for $5 and one for $8).  I placed them side by side with my pole in between them.  They were great but they slipped away from the pole so I bought really wide elastic and velcro and I placed the velcro on the inside sides of the matresses so they stick to each other and then I place the elastic over the ends to "tie" the matresses together.  The total cost was less than $20.  It is very firm to walk on and very thick to cushion me when I fall.  Heck of a lot cheaper than a regular pole mat!

This is the cheapest one out there, and one of the thickest. It's a really good deal. I guess they are cheaper cuz they have slight defects, but they still work. On mine, the velcro doesn't line up perfetly, but it isn't a big deal at all.

after being stuck in this wheelchair I borrowed it has a 4 inch cushion, nicely durable cover..I was thinking when I get back on pole maybe getting four good thick ones and using my crafting skills to velcro them to each other..I woonder if that would work….
