Im feeling really down today. Im not sure if I will have to stop poling for a while. I was in a car accident a few months ago and went to a chiropractor (because my lawyers told me to go).  He ordered a MRI which found 2bulging and 1 herinated disc.  But funny thing is, I was not having pain. I've been poling for over a year and have been progressing well without any pain. I want to continue to pole but I wanna be safe.  Part of me thinks its the lawyer/ chiropractor/ MRI kind of exaggerating the whole thing. What do you think.

Seek treatment and continue if allowed.  I have been having issues with my back lately and just found that I have a few pinched nerves.  If you do nothing about it it WILL get worse.  Find out what kind of restorative exercises you can do.  If you do not treat it you could end up not ever being able to pole again.  If you can, find a chiropractor that specializes in sports therapy and recovery.

I'm a physiotherapist, and teach pole dancing and Pilates in my spare time. I've had an issue with a sore disc in my back for months and it comes and goes depending on what move I'm working on.

Generally flexing the back (sitting, lying on your back, bending, squatting, sit up's and inverting up) will make the buldge worse, and extensions (walking, standing tall, leaning back and 1/2 press ups's) will make it feel better. If not treated, it could start pinching on the nevers and causing lots and lots of pain.

I would suggest seeing a physical therapist – they will be able to asses your back, and also give you some specific treatment on getting core strength. It's all about the core and stabilising the lower back – not sit ups!! Learning to work your pelvic floor, and working on what we call a neutral spine has completly cured my back and I can do what ever I want on the pole. An example of some excellent core stabilisation techniques is demonstrated by KT coats (link below) getting you back to stay still while moving the legs

I can give you some other pilates type exercises to help as well…just give me a message!

    Hope this helps!!

Thanks so much guys. I was able to see the actual MRI films myself. The 2 in the T-spine was barely bulging. Not much to even speak of. But the L5-S1 had about 2-3 mm bluge with min herniation.  some encroachment on the left root nerve. So Im able to continue poling for now, but have to limit some moves, bridges, back bends and of course sit ups. Thaks a lot guys.
