  • Poling with others vs alone.

I am finding myself struggling when I pole alone. No strength to do moves that I have done in the studio or with other polers, no creativity in freestyle dance, and the pain from moves feels worse! But when I’m in the studio or with fellow poling friends I am strong, can do moves that I can’t seem to do at home, can tolerate the pain and can dance better! It’s really frustrating! It gets spendy to go to the studio all the time. Ugh! Does anyone else have this issue? Any suggestions on how to break down this wall?!

I find virtual pole jams really help. Set up skype dates or use veena chat to pole at home with others!

Oh! That may be a good idea. I have never done that before! πŸ™‚

This happens with me, too. I feel stronger when I’m out poling, vs at home. I was attributing it to when I go out there is central air conditioning, which I lack in my garage based pole room, but my husband says it’s probably more of an adrenaline thing. Like, there’s other people around watching and I don’t want to “fail” in front of them so I push harder than when I’m chillin and playing at home. I’m sorry I have no tips to help, but you aren’t alone, if that helps any! πŸ™‚

I agree with Krissy for me having something like a Skype session to motivate me or just chat with another fellow poler is always good. And with the help of them I have attempted new moves and got them, and made friends along the way!!! I’ve never been to a studio so I can’t compare. Good luck on your journey !

I have this issue, as well, but I have it in both directions: When I pole with other people around, either on skype or in person, I find myself stronger and a little more bold when it comes to trying new moves… but, I am also super shy when it comes to actually dancing, freestyling of any kind becomes almost impossible, because I feel so embarrassed. Something I’m working on.
On the flip-side, though, I do find myself a bit more timid when I work on new moves alone. I think it’s partly because I’m feeling my way into and through the move, I’m more aware of what I’m doing with my body, my contact points, and- yes- the pain. I’m also better at being creative and free, getting into the music I love to play, and no longer feel shy about doing my dancing.

I think, in many ways, it’s about your perspective, and how well you push yourself when you are alone. There are merits to that hyper-awareness of dancing alone, there are drawbacks to feeling like you have no one around to share with.
I think this is why many of the people here, and hopefully myself when I get my camera going and figure out a good angle, put up videos. We’re able to put up our triumphs and our frustrations and share with each other.
Skype jams are also super helpful, because we can work off each other!

Try to find the good points of your situation- you may find that working alone adds something else to your dancing, or to your perspective, your style. πŸ™‚

Love to! I don’t currently have a pole though!!! We can do floor work or chair dance or just chat it up!! Either way skype sessions always end up being fun, love to meet other polers and share that passion!

I pole alone and at a studio and they both have their good and bad sides. It took me a little while to find my groove when poling alone but now I find that I am usually quite productive at home. Things that help me are to really have a good space that is clean and tidy- my pole is in the kitchen and I make sure that all chores are done- no dishes in the sink, floor and counters clean, everything put away. I try to have things that make the room feel beautiful- fresh flowers, a nice candle, etc. I even use cleaners that I truly love the smell of…these things help me to be in a good frame of mind where I like the space I’m in. I try to pull myself together- hair, pole clothes, a little makeup…I wish I could roll out of bed and feel beautiful no matter what I look like, but the truth is, I don’t, so these things help me (nothing crazy, but little things to just feel pretty). I’m always on the lookout for music that moves me. Having inspiring music is such a huge thing! Finally, recording myself and sharing it is a big part of my practice. I might be in my own little world, but to try something, review it, and make it better really gives me some focus. If something is not working out, I can usually watch and figure out what the problem is. I also do love to perform, so sharing clips with others and getting some feedback is a very positive thing for me and can help drive me to keep working on something until I get it smooth (I do most of my sharing on instagram).

I get very overwhelmed with freestyling, so I don’t always even commit to freestyling an entire song. I will just try to work a trick I am working on into a dance with no plan of when to end it. I find it takes a lot of pressure off and I feel a lot more freedom to just dance- and I end up going longer than I would when I put all of this pressure on myself to do a perfect freestyle. That’s my own hangup though and my own little way of working around it!

I hope some of that helps!!

Missym357-thank you’ I feel that may be part of my issue to is the space doesn’t have the “vibe”. I am going to get some lights and candles and see if that helps. πŸ™‚ I folded all my laundry so I don’t have that staring at me now (now I just need to stay on top of it…eek).

Stiletto Joe-I would love to skype! I don’t have a skype account so I will get one set up and let you know. I am going to Divine tomorrow and I think gymnastics with CrazyKosters Tuesday. 😊

I really appreciate everyone’s comments and suggestions. Γ°ΕΈΛœΖ’Γ’ΒΒ€Γ―ΒΈΒ
