I keep running into a small problem while upside down on the pole. My hands just seem to want to be in the way. I can invert strongly and get my knees above my hands and all that jazz but it just seems that if I need toP re-grip (example, letting go in gemini and grabbing the pole again, or going for an inverted crucifix and learning my pole is out to kill me so I change my mind) I can really struggle to be able to get my hands back securely around the pole. I admit I do have large leg muscles/quads, in proportion to the rest of my frame. It’s like they’re getting in the way. I thought perhaps it was this but I tried to grab the pole near to my belly button recently and had the same issue so this has made me question if I’m doing something wrong. It’s like my body is hugging the pole a bit too desperately! lol Any ideas?

Hi Saeth, when you invert, try pushing your legs with your hips up toward the ceiling. It gets your legs higher, then when you bend to get into your knee pit, point your toes toward the floor (of course they won’t literally go to the floor, but will give you a more secure hold to remove your hands). If your profile pic is what your your outside leg hang (or Gemini looks like), your leg is not bent enough and will cause you to trap your hand with more pressure from your thigh. As for Crucifix, when you turn, make sure you are removing your inside arm (the one closest to the pole), then use that free hands to grab the pole by your head/shoulders to remove your other hands from between your knees/lower thigh. These have worked very well with my students. 🙂

Ty Litlbit. I’ll definitely keep those tips in mind. The photo was one of my first attempts at Gemini. It’s much better now but I’m grateful for any tips given. I think I’ve been grabbing too high when trying to do the crucifix. I’m not sure if these tips will solve all my problems but they will definitely help, thank you! I’ll try to monitor more closely what’s going on. I find it a bit scary when I can’t re-grip the pole rapidly and securely because I just keep thinking if anything goes wrong it could lead to a fall.

Litlbit has great advice!!! After reading your last post I want to add that it’s equally important to feel secure in your leg grips, not just the hands. We use a lot of leg grips in pole and becoming comfortable with those can also save you from a fall, you won’t always be able to re-grip with the hands! Working on leg grips off all kinds from the floor and from reverse handstands would be a good idea to help you become comfortable with them. Practice it every session so leg grips become automatic too! 💜

Ty ladies. I think really the proper root of the problem is the last two weeks I’ve just been slipping so much so I do not feel stable on the pole. Today inverted crucifix and general crucifix felt scary and my hands were slipping even though I can hang onto the poles with my legs and invert with confidence. This is at home and at the studio. It’s frustrating so I think my hands seeming to be “in the way” is just my nervous reaction to what’s going on. On top of this I think I’m reaching a bit of a plateau where I can do quite a lot of things but then I’m not quite strong enough for the more advanced things and I’m slipping so it’s limiting my practice. Argh!
