    Hey all,
I did something to my shoulder last week and I’m not sure what it was. I’ve been so careful with doing conditioning but I was trying inverts tired and I either had bad form or something. I didn’t feel anything go wrong at all but I woke up the next morning with pain under my clavicle in the front of my shoulder! I thought I just slept on it wrong but I was going to stay off the pole until it stopped hurting anyway. Well it’s been a week and I’m still hurting! I know I need to see a doctor but we’re broke right now. I looked a bit online and I see that I need to just stay off the pole for a few weeks, make sure I do more conditioning when I get back and focus on abs and legs for now. I’m just so bummed because I was on day 24 of the invert program and it was going so well! Anyway I’m not really asking any questions, just wanted to tell someone because I’ve been so bummed… I really do want to get in with a good PT because I really wanted to make sure I was doing these exercises correctly. Veena do you have any tips on making sure I’m doing the shoulder conditioning exercises correctly? Thanks for reading I appreciate it. I swear I keep hurting myself and I keep trying not to! I’ve pulled several muscles on my legs and my abs in the past year because I keep pushing too hard. I really didn’t know that I could push harder than I should. I thought I finally had it figured out using veenas’ step wise programs but here I am again! Any and all advice appreciated.

It sounds like a pectoral (chest) muscle if it’s right under the clavicle and inverting usually wouldn’t strain that area too much, usually. Without seeing how you were inverting it’s just an assumption tho. If the pain hasn’t changed much and it hurts to breath you could have a rib out. If you strained the muscle it will get better over time and might feel “good” to massage the area, if a rib is out ouch it will not help to massage it, unless it minor then some massage might loosen up the opposing tight muscle and the rib could go back. I tore my pectoral minor moving a free standing fireplace up some steps and I didn’t even know I had done anything until the next day….Hurt for a looooong time.

Now how it happened? As long as you’re not using really heavy resistance I doubt you injured yourself doing conditioning exercises. Sometimes we get injuries not from what we’re doing but rather because we have a muscle imbalance. If you have super tight pectoral muscles and weak muscles around the scapula, injuries can develop. As long as you’re not doing any of the exercises and pole moves by jerking, jumping or throwing your body weight without control you’re probably doing things right… if you follow my cues in each lesson.

Sometimes just leaving things alone for a few days is all we need.

Veena you’re a genius! I don’t know why it hasn’t occurred to me that I have muscles under my boobs… Haha! It’s not a rib because I can breath just fine and it hurts mostly when I move my arm across the body and up like taking a shirt off. It also hurts when I reach straight out to lift something like a pan full of food without bending the elbow. I bet I strained a pectoral muscle. It’s slowly getting better… I’m having trouble resting it completely due to housework but I am trying to look at this as a chance to build my non-dominant side. And breathing a sigh of relief that I prolly didn’t hurt it inverting! I do promise I’m not kicking into my inverts. The studio I was at did teach them that way but once I found your site I stopped and started working on strength using your lessons instead. Oh I forgot I was cleaning out the garage that day too I bet I lifted something wrong! It’s a good thing I’m leaving on vacation I want to pole sooo badly. I just keep walking by my pole and telling myself no, or just use the non-dominant arm… I can’t do push-ups or even a down-dog right now but I read a post you wrote a long time ago about how much we pressure ourselves to ‘get good’ at pole and how life goes on if we don’t. It really helped! Fitness is healthy, but not the be-all end-all of my life. I should go for a walk and do other things for fun! I’m going to try anyway 🙂 thanks again for this website! You’re making my life a whole lot better.

Traveler, I’m glad to hear you’re not stressing about taking some time off. Take some time on vacation to try and stretch a bit and bring a tennis ball with so you can do some rolling on any sore spots you have!
