Remembering Floorwork??
Posted by byrdgrrl on March 7, 2011 at 6:34 pmSo I watch a whole bunch of floorwork vids, thinking I wanna do that and that and that. Then when I put the music on and get on the floor, everything seems to fall out of my head. I can't remember a damn thing. Would people be willing to share some tips on how to remember what to do? Does it just take time to get used to? Thanks!

I find that it does take time to get used to, and integrate, new moves into your workout/routine. Given some time and some repetition, you'll find they come a little more naturally.
I tend to have this issue when dealing with all moves, even pole moves, so I have to make up tricks for myself. Things like writing them down on something, and then going back to check it to make sure I've got all of my intended moves done before I cool down. Or, making up a routine would help…work into it slowly, check your notes often, and practice through over and over. You'll get it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

It just takes time. Floorwork is one of my favorite things to do when I'm kinda feeling "meh" about dancing. It's a great warmup and it makes me feel sexy and slinky, no matter what. And even if I do the same stuff, I enjoy it nonetheless. The more floorwork you do, the more you'll begin to incorporate new moves–and to make up new moves. There are so many times now that a move just happens, and I love those because they usually end up looking great. They come from really feeling the music.

I totally understand and have started to practise a lot more, iv really found just dancing with the pole with no spins or tricks then using the floor you have to think that the floor is part of the pole you can learn so much for example look at some other forms of dance like breakdancing, you don't have to perform it like a breakdancer but slow it down mess with it, also yoga poses start with the basics and build it up, you have to look at learning floor work like learn pole spins and tricks and enjoy it just as much.https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Repetition, repetition, repetition!
Floorwork is the same as pole in that it needs to be worked on again and again to find the fluidity of it. I was challenged one time to just do a routine with no spins/inverts/tricks. What a joy that was! Just beautiful dance and transitions!
When I was dancing in the clubs, I'd make a list for myself of what moves I wanted to make sure I incorporated, and before I went on stage I'd refer to those notes and go, "oh yeah, I want to make sure I do a xxx and a xxxx tonight." It kept it fresh for me and more engaging for the audience.
Most competitions are now requiring floorwork now, too! I'm seeing on the lists of "Must-do" moves is 20-30 consecutive seconds of floorwork.
Keep playing with it and it will become easier! Turn on some music and dance! Even if you do the same thing over and over again! You'll start to have fun with it. Promise! 😉
