    Hi y’all!

Sorry for my long absence on here; me and my friend have been very busy opening our studio 🙂
Now that it’s all done I have some more trouble:

I’m only doing this as a side yob, and some of my collegues saw our page on facebook and our website. You also might need to know that I had my leg broken last summer and from that I still suffer pain in certain situations so I’m not able to do my regular job at the moment and instead I’m working in an office right now.

So there are two concerns about my side job: Although I live in Germany and we are usually known to be pretty open minded, some find that pole dancing is not a suitable way for a police officer to spend her free time.
I can only lough at this and I don’t think I have any problems with arguing on this issue. They probably just don’t know that the asians have done similar things for fitness 1000 years ago and that the pole community is well organised and holding championships.

The other one might be a little more difficoult: I need some arguments, that proof that pole dancing is not a hinderance for my health at the moment but instead beneficial and help me to recover a lot sooner.

So I would be very happy if anyone could name me some scientific research or articles about the health benefits of pole dancing.

(I know where all of this is coming from; I was going to advance – is that the right word? – to the next rank and some are pissed off because of that and the fact, that I’m in an office right now. There is just a lot of jealousy, but it’s causing me some serious trouble at the moment.)

    Thank you all in advance!!!

P.S.: If you’d like to have a look on our website and facebook, here it is (all in German though):

Have you thought about asking them if they would feel any differently if you were doing gymnastics horizontal bar? I’m sure they would feel differently.

It might be worth a google of some articles about pole fitness and gymnastics. how much strength you need such as being able to so pull up etc.

Maybe find a few good quality you tube videos (the strength gymnastic kind) to try and show them that it’s all about strength and coordination which is needed for all kind of daily functional things.

As for your recovery, doing all sorts of gym work including pull ups will be done on the pole there is no real difference other than the sharp burst of quick intervals you would get from running for example. With your leg I doubt you could do this anyway. Also look for articles about stretching and developing flexibility for recovery as again that’s covered in pole and gymnastics alike.

I don’t have any articles to hand but I’m sure some research will give you a good standing on your recovery stance and that pole of not a hindrance.

I think getting some solid info/recommendation from your doctor or physical therapist treating you for your leg would hold more weight with your colleagues.

    Thank you both so far!

I was going to consult my doctor tomorrow and ask him if he seen anything wrong with pole concerning my leg, and I’m hoping that he’ll write that down as well. And yes, I was also going to aks my physical therapist.

    What I’ve done so far:
    – Printed out some information from the German Pole Sports Association regarding our national championships (where one can see that there is a youth and men’s category)
    – Printed out some information about pole as university sports
    – Newspaper Articles about pole being part of the olympics
    – Pictuers of other forms of dance and fitness where womes are wearing equally or less clothing than we do (ballet, salsa, tango, gymnastics, running, beachvolleyball
    – picked some videos to show the varity of pole (without the sexy stuff…)

I’m still kinda nervous, though. I still would like to add something about the pysical benefits of pole that sounds “official”…

Wow, how unfortunate that you are working people that don’t understand your passion.

I’m a podiatry student interested in this topic too and I often search my university library database for articles about pole. Sadly, the academic world hasn’t caught up with us yet. Pole dancing features (often negatively) in feminist articles but that’s about it!

I’m reading a book that looks at pole from a sociology context called “Pole Dancing, Empowerment and Embodiment” by Samantha Holland. I was lucky enough to find it in my University Library, but I’ve also seen it for sale on Amazon.

Lastly, if you like to pole in heels, you might be pleased to know that wearing heels can help to reduce incontinence (but this is pretty much the only health benefit found to be associated with high heels, sorry ladies!).

Good luck with your search, and please post anything you do find!

I just did a PubMed search to see if there has ever been an academic study done on pole dancing…absolutely nothing! I guess the research just hasn’t caught up yet.

I think this is quite a good video: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mckShZu8BTM

Get them to give it a go and they’ll see how difficult it is!

Sorry to hear though that you’re having trouble at work, I suffered for 2 years in an unpleasant workplace, it’s not fun. I hope things improve. If not could you transfer to a different area/ branch or something?

I do feel though that really it should be none of their buisness what you do in your spare time (unless it was illegal or unethical or something obviously), but hopefully you can convince then around!

Thank you all so much! I put that video on my tablet, among others, to show them.

Another question: It’s been a while, but I remember that someone posted a picture where you could see pole dancers and other athletes doning very sililar poses in camparison. Does anyone know where to find that?

And another one: Does anyone have any video suggestions of someone pole in heels without beilng sexy?
