So one day I was bored at a playground as my friend was exercising and decided to do an invert on the pole there and there were a few things in the way and so I kept falling back down as Id try to go up. It was only later that I realised i shouldn’t have done that because my teacher always stressed to control down otherwise you could hurt a rib. Anyway after doing that a few times I got bored and went home but a day or so later I noticed pain in my left shoulder (I invert on my left) just under the shoulder blade and I’m worried I may have hurt a rib. I can breathe properly but when I lay on my back or side it hurts and if I straighten my shoulder into the correct posture or someone presses on the spot it really hurts too, plus I get a pain when I do invert now. It’s now been over a week and I’m just worried because I don’t know wether I could have hurt it from improper inverts or just something else, I could just be paranoid for all I know.

I am now laying in bed at 6:30am because I can’t sleep from the pain. If anyone has any advice I would be so happy haha. Thanks 🙂

it could be a strained muscle or a dislocated rib. sounds like a strained muscle but cant be sure unless you get it checked out. I have strained a muscle inverting and I just had to rest for a few weeks and do conditioning work to strengthen the muscle after the pain had subsided.

I definitely wouldnt do inverts right now until you know what’s going on.

Rib injuries are the most common in pole and can cause the whole side to hurt. Inverting can strain muscles too though especially from going up and then coming down uncontrolled like that. These injuries can take a while to heal as well. Just rest up and do not invert for a while. If you have a foam roller, I would do that to the back very gently and take lots of bubble baths. I hurt myself training Jallegra and I know that these injuries in that area take a while to feel better. Make sure you take care and keep us updated.

Try a chiropractor! I’ve had mine popped back in a couple times (after the first time I didn’t listen and wait long enough to fully heal) but it’s worth the trip and paying to get it properly “popped” hope you fel better soon!

Ok, I’m going to say something really vague and probably wrong… BUT it did make sense to me…

I had a similar sounding pain (I don’t think it was pole related) and I also thought maybe it was a rib, or maybe a muscle… and I rested it and it wouldn’t go away… I stretched it and it wouldn’t go away… I went and got a message thinking it would help, however it was at a chain and it was really relaxing but not firm enough or healing. She was sweet but not very knowledgable. Anyway…

I had a family member who is really is really into active release and fitness say “I’ll fix it” and he jammed his knuckle into the spot while I raised and lowered my hand out to the side (think jumping jack). and it was INSTANTLY better (after it stopped hurting from having a knuckle jabbed in my back)….

What he said that made sense to me (but could be wrong, or I could be repeating it wrong)… See the image below. Some muscle fibers from the Lat (the large muscle on the left) can sometimes get caught or pinched under the scapula… and whatever he did loosed them up and freed them from being pinched.

Now is it recommend you find someone to jab their knuckle into your back? No, but a chiropractor who also does Active Release could be really helpful. 🙂

Did any of that make sense?

Also I was convinced he knew what he was talking about because I didn’t even point out the spot… after just describing the pain he knew where to jam his knuckle without even asking me exactly where the pain was… and it was the exact right spot.

Wow, AK, that is AMAZING! I am a huge believer in chiro and ART–it has helped me with hamstring injuries that used to just ache and throb.

It’s possible to fix a subluxed rib this way too. I had a therapist treat my rib in a similar manner.

And one time I was having rib pain and I used my foam roller- there was a loud pop, some pain, then I was all better. So weird. But it felt much better afterwards

This guy seems to get involved pretty often too. ART is amazing, def recommend. Massage therapists can specialize in this too, and might be easier to find than a Chiro who is certified depending on where you live. Just my experience working on polers but seriously this muscle is almost always tight/shortened and because it attaches so soecifically to the ribs, it can very easily cause them to slip out of place, esp while inverting and REALLY especially if you hold your breath during.

And this pose is seriously so amazing for releasing ribs…maybe not until your pain has decreased/after having ART. But good lord. Did it for the first time during our first yoga challenge, and it was like heaven for all those tight rib muscles/side muscles. Heaven.

Ahhh there you go again hitting it in the head maybe that’s why I dislocated ribs so often the first year – improper invert while holding breath. Hah. We hold our breath when we need it the most – when we are concentrating! Yoga gave me the gift of knowing full breath, that is something I am forever grateful for.
