It has been brought to my attention that with all the education out there and how to videos, that people learning poling are progressing at quite a steadier rate than when I had over two years ago when I first began poling. I understand that some people will pick things up faster but it brings to light the most important aspect of poling- SAFETY. We’re so eager to learn more and more and be able to land those awesome tricks we see that often we’re not giving our bodies the time and progression it deserves to be able to accomplish those awesome moves in a safe manner. Pole injuries are no joke. An injury is serious and can often lead to months of pain and physical therapy resulting in no pole. I felt like I needed to say something because from a health care perspective and self poler, I have noticed an increase in what I’m seeing as dangerous poling. It’s also important that people keep in mind for safer poling you have to have the appropriate equipment to do so. We’ve all said this time and time again- certain poles are NOT designed for pole fitness- they are simply decorative novelty items. Please refer to Veena’s educational article about appropriate poles and why a quality pole is important:

There is risk in all we do…..even sleeping has its risk. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_dwarf.gif I love pole dance and it is the BEST WORKOUT EVER!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif As pole dancers we become Strong, Flexible, and increase our Cardiovascular stamina. Working with an instructor who understands the body and will guide you though the proper steps to take even before you learn your first pole move is the best way to learn. I have designed my lessons around preparing the dancer for the intense work we will be asking of our body later in the future. As students you need to LISTEN to what the instructors are telling you. Following my guide lines for progressing though the lessons. http://ver3.studioveena.com/lessons/view/2134 In studio, if your working with an instructor that insists you do something you feel your not ready for speak up! The most important things we can do: Get clear, proper instruction and learn to work within YOUR limits. Not all pole moves are going to be suitable for all dancers. We are all different and we all should NOT be expected to perform every move that is out there. Pole is a wonderful exercise and a beautiful form of expression https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I double ditto the above. When I started couple years ago, we had 4 weeks of each "level." By level 2 we were inverting as a class. I was okay with starting from the ground, then squating, then bent knees, although still by kicking up. I was encouraged to stand straight and do it. I had my own pole by then and even though I didn’t feel ready, made many attempts; this resulted in pulling muscles in rib cage so badly I could not move/even breathe. I heard/felt a pop and just lay there. I thought I fractured a rib. I let it go for few weeks thinking it would get better, then went to doctor. I had inflamed muscle so bad and got medication. I could not pole for about 2-3 months. I realized then I would pay attention to my body, I hope I’m doing that https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif I love the progression of veena’s lessons, I still even skip some if I don’t feel ready and back track a lot.
