  • Skinny chicken legs and 40mm poles…

Hi all. I know there have been tons of discussions about pole sizes, but I have a very specific question which I couln’t find an answer to in any of the threads. I have a 50mm now but I want to buy a smaller pole some time soon. I am leaning towards a 40mm since most of my favorite moves require a good hand grip (which I don’t have on the 50mm). BUT I have really skinny legs with a huge gap between my thighs and I’m not happy with the thought of not being able to do a crucifix anymore. So, this is a question for chicken leg ladies like me who have experience with 40mm: are there moves which require thigh squeezing (like planks and CAR and such) which you can do on a 45mm but NOT on a 40mm? Thanks in advance for participating in another discussion about diameters…

    I’ve never tried a 40…. But going from a 50 to a 40 is a pretty big jump. Could be great or a huge transition, I don’t know…

That being said, I know Veena seems to really like her 40mm, and she has very lean limbs. She could probably shed some light on how it is for those moves.

Well I don’t have chicken legs but at my old studio there was a 38mm pole. It was great for my little hands, but for tricks I liked using the 45mm. I could never really get a hang of the 50mm. My legs are too short and stubby lol. I have a 45 at home now and love it for my tricks (aside from being super slippery), though I do miss the 38/40mm size for my spins.

Is there a studio nearby with varying sizes you could try out?

I learned on a 50 for the first 6 months then transitioned to a 45. It’s a bit tricky at first because the leg grip is different, but you do get used to it. I’ve had limited experience with 40mm, but the hand grip is incredible!

I haven’t had any issue with the 40, and yeah my legs are thin!! The biggest thing is leg hooks tend to hurt more but you do get use to it. As with ANY pole ANY size as long are you are warmed up and the pole is warm it should be workable. I use grip aids on my poles when it’s cold.

I don’t have thin legs, but I have tiny little baby hands, and I empathize SO MUCH with grip issues on a 50. My hands don’t even go all the way around a 50 -.- I haaaaate using a 50 for anything with my hands especially, but I’ve also found everything else – body holds included – easier on a 45. I’m not sure why, but that diameter just agrees with me all around. I’ve never tried a 40 (I imagine that would be too small for me for body holds to be comfortable), but I love the 45 way better than the 50.

Have you tried a 45, and compared how the 45 feels compared to a 40? 50 to 40 just seems like a huge jump especially considering how much of a difference just 5mm can make. If you’re a small person then I imagine a 40 will work for you, but I’d definitely find a way to try both diameters before buying.

Thank you all for your replies. I haven’t decided yet, but I think as long as I cannot find any thin lady telling me she can do thigh squeezing moves on a 45 but not for the life of her on a 40, I will go with the 40mm. I think. It is such an investment and I would hate to be longing for a 40 soon after I bought the 45. It is a big jump though, I know….

I have used every size, I have 50’s 45’s and 40 is what I prefer now. I’ve even used a 38mm and I have yet to not be able to grip with my legs. Every finish and size pole has its challenges and these can all be worked around and adjustements made. I love the secure hand grip the 40 offers. If you are very tall and love to do elbow locks and grips like the embrace then a 45 might make it more comfortable.

No, I’m not exactly tall. Not at all. Thanks Veena, your reply is very helpful… 🙂

    I also tried 40, 45, 50
A year and a half ago I came to pole with chicken legs but the more I exercised and stretched and twirked with the time my muscles became more supple and firm and I never had problems on any sizes with sits or CA or CK release, planks or Sleeping Beauty, elbow embrace etc. But I always learn on brass. I stick to it no problem. And it made me comfortable with chrome also but I have to use more of a grip aid and a special lotion on my body working on chrome for my own security
