So fed up….
Posted by Kate87 on November 3, 2011 at 4:10 pmHi all,
I've been poling for roughly 10 months now, and I have just come back from a 2 month break due to holidays/illness/work.
Tonight I was due to have my first pole class for a few months, however it was cancelled 🙁
I thought that I'd go home and try a few moves on my home pole- and I am shocked, disgusted and upset at how much strength I've lost. Moves that I could do are a struggle- I could deadlift both my shoulder and iguana mount, however now I'm lucky to get my legs halfway up.
No real point to this post, just feel so fed up knowing it's going to take me ages to get back to where I was. As well as that, I've probably put on half a stone and feel like a fat lump.
Anyone else been in a similar situation?

Yeah, I get frustrated as well. You just need to get your groove back. Go buy some new clothes, through on some good music and just let it flow. Don't be hung up on what you lost, you will quicly recover. Be proud of where you are TODAY! I think we ALL go through these periods, just part of life. So cheer up, and kick some ass on that pole!

I so understand how you're feeling for I'm in the same situation except its been a 2 year break from poling for mehttps://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif.
It's been 2 weeks since I started back into poling and I'm so excited and even tell people that I feel like a Dirty Virgin for its all so new again but I know what that amazing rush feels like once I get that move I've been working so hard to at.
Even though I'm not as strong as I was in the past for some reason I feel very strong and looking forward to my pole journey.
We just need bonding time with our poles again Kate87 and it will all come back and more to us https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Yeah I hate losing strength from a break but I don't think it will take you as long to catch up as it does to learn the moves from scratch because of muscle memory.

Exact thing happened to me after 8 months of poling. First day I went back I didnt have the strength to do many things. So instead of getting frustrated, I decided to regain my strength by learning to do everything on my ‘other’ side. I went through everything much faster than the first time around. It was challenging and fun and kept me away from the frustration. After one month back on the pole, I am now good with my ‘other’ side and have regained a lot of my strength. Another thing that has helped me is to practice routines as doing that helps build strength and endurance, instead of focusing on learning new moves I am not that strong for yet.
Don’t give up, keep at it and you’ll be back in no time!

I REALLY wanted to kick myself in the butt when I "took a break" and started poling again.. I actually flew to Ca to take private classes (from Fl) when Sheila Kelly's studio first opened after it aired on Oprah. I was sooo excited- but when I got home I quickly lost interest because there were NO studios- support ANYWHERE at that time to be found… So I quit! I restarted again about 6 mo ago. When I see / read about other polers who started at that same time and see how advanced they are now I just want to shoot myself for quitting back then! I could have come such a loooong way by now. But, I am where I am- and happy to be here again now. Now I do have support and Im not the lone poler!

The greatest thing that I love about poling is the journey. It is a personal journey and I can hear it in each of the responses. This is just only a part of the journey and a process that I am learning to trust. I am grateful that I have this wonderful, expressive, beautiful, and powerful outlet in my life. Progress or not, you have the ability to come back stronger than before. One person mentioned muscle memory and that is so true. I will never forget that first try to hang onto the pole and just slid down. My first spin was so sloppy… I may lose strength but my body has already had that connection with the pole. It will never be THAT awkward again–so it’s not reeeeeally starting over. I like the idea of being a Dirty Virgin, haha! And working on the opposite side is also a great suggestion. I have found that doing veenas strength training has helped me immeasurably. Try going back to forearm stands and lift up from there. Forearm stands
may seem like a big jump back but it will not take as long this time as it did the first time. Also, I have been encouraged by stumbling once on Veenas videos right after she had the baby. To see her frustration in getting her groove back helped me sooo much since she makes it seem so effortless. I hope she doesn’t mind I mentioned it, but they are on her YouTube channel 😉 love you Veena!! -
Muscle memory is a wonderful thing! You will bounce back quicker then you think and like many have said above…you already KNOW the moves so it will be easier then when you first started:) Keep at it! Fall in love with pole all over again 🙂

Yup. I had a 1 year break from poling. I lost my invert and shoulder mount, and after one year, I am just barely getting my invert, and haven't begun to get my shoulder mount back. I have gained a TON of weight from medication and desperately want to get it off, but the same medication makes me so exhasted, so I feel your pain hun. It's awful. You just gotta keep your head up and know that you have done it before and you can do it again.

Keep your head up. You are awesome!

I haven't poled for about 10 months and found I had lost strength, coordination plus gained too much fat! So I have been walk/running (run 1 min, walk 4 for about 40-50 min) doing Veenas basic warm up and conditioning routine as a workout along with lots of stretching and some basic weight lifting just to get strength back so I am not so discouraged when I start doing spins/tricks again.
That's my plan for now and I know if you have a plan, stick to it the best you can, don't have too high expectations for yourself then you will reach your goal.
You can do it!!
