I think there was a thread here once on a somewhat similar topic, but I can’t remember what it was exactly.
I don’t consider who danced to the song before me. I don’t think you should ever feel like you have to avoid dancing to a song or wait a certain period of time to dance to it after someone else performed with it. I’m sure there are some people out there who would get all pissy and irritated if someone danced to “their song” but I think that’s just immaturity. You don’t get to have any sort of ownership over a song just because you performed to it. If someone uses choreography that somebody else did – that’s an issue. Basically like plagiarism for dance as far as I’m concerned (unless they’ve asked first).
When choosing a song for a performance, you’ve gotta choose one that speaks to you, that you enjoy dancing to (and can handle listening to over and over and over again). You have to be able to connect to your song if you want your audience to really enjoy the performance. If that happens to be a song that someone else performed to and they get mad about it, that’s their problem. I’m not saying you have to be rude about it or anything, but I just wouldn’t even give it a second thought when choosing music 🙂
