I have two seperate showcase routines to choreograph.  I would really like to hear from everyone…what songs are you tired of??  For me personally~i could go the rest of my life without seeing ANOTHER routine to that song from the Twilight soundtrack….in your opinion~what songs have been overdone????

While I can see what you're saying, I think there's often a reason for songs being used over and over. They just work!

Personally I dance to what I like whether or not I've seen a hundred other people doing a routine to the same piece (Kings of Leon – "Closer" is the first example that springs to mind). Ultimately it's about what you do with the music; I've seen so many people dance to the above and everyone's done something different, so I've can honestly say I've never had a problem with it.

Of course it's always great to see new tracks used, but a lot of the time we then all add the 'new' piece to our playlists anyway. I suspect that's why pieces of music end up becoming well-used by the same communities as we all tend to take inspiration from each other.

Funny but I don't really care what other people dance to…I only care what I dance to. I may get tired of dancing to a song but I can't remember a time I reached a point where I didn't want to watch someone else dance because I didn't like the song they danced to or because i was sick of others using it.

In fact, more the opposite for me, many songs I don't like or wouldn't have wanted to dance to wound up on my play list because I saw someone dance to them who inspired me with how beautiful they danced.

But I've seen many incredible dances that I enjoyed that were done to songs that I typcially skip over on my play list these days because the song seems old and worn out yet I've still  loved the performance.

I would like to see more "oh, I never thought of that as a pole song" type of songs in performances!! Like Led Zeppelin and Fiona Apple 🙂

I don't think you can dance a song to death.  I try not to do competition routines to songs that for example, everyone knows Felix danced to because I don't want anyone thinking of Felix while I'm performing.  I think it's good to pick familiar and popular songs to dance to that most people like because it helps overcome nerves and most of the time if we like the song we are more inclined to like the dance.

I just try not to dance to a song someone has already won something with like Sober – Tool – Alethea won the championship with that song – I don't want the comparison.

I think when a song is less familiar the dancer has to work much harder.  It's a physchological thing.

I'll also mix a lesser known song in with a popular song too.

Part of what helps me choose my music is whether or not You Tube is going to allow me to use it on any vids I upload there.  Which could also help explain the "done to death" side of pole dancing.  For example, I have danced to Led Zepplin as PowerTwirl suggested…but do you think YouTube would allow it…no way, I had to change the audio.  However, I know I could upload a song done to "Closer" (first song I thought of as well, although the dancers that can use the syncopated rhythms are much more interesting than the ones who use the typical 1-2-3-4).  So I guess part of the decision for me stems from what I want to do with the video.

I don't like most popular pop songs.  But that is just my taste. Some performances I would like better if there was better music. Sometimes I actually turn the sound off because I dislike the music so much. So I guess im on the other end of Empy 😛

I still think people should dance to whatever music they like and dance to music that makes them move in a better way. 🙂

I bet there are people that can't stand some of the songs that I dance to.

Some songs I don't care how many have danced to them if I like the song like Glory Box by Portishead and that song by Santogold that I can't remember the name of 😛

And some songs I just can't stand like Closer even though some still love it.

    So bottom line..

Do and dance to what ever you like 🙂

I don't particularly like screaming rock.  I have kids who throw tantrums i don't want to listen to grown men doing it.  But I know how to mute, so it's all good 🙂

I think it's great when a vid of a dance just takes my breath away, and i think the music chosen can have a lot to do with that.  One thing is for sure, if the dancer doesn't like the song they're not going to be able to rock it, so the dancer has to consider their own preference without forgetting about the audience because this is after all a performance art.

If I'm just dancing for myself I tend to like Indie rock.

I like to dance to songs that people often forget about or even never heard of.  There seems to be a "list" of songs people always recomend and those are the ones that can be so called played out, although to me some of them are classic pole songs that I will never stop dancing to!  A few of those may be Starstruck by Santogold (altho its a true fav in my opinion!) anything by LL Cool J, and lets not forget Chrry pie by warrant LOL But a few of my fav NON PLAYED OUTt songs would be Mel B feat Missy "I want You Back"… Sylk E Fyne" Romeo & Juliet" …Jojo "In the Dark"…  Remy Ma "Concieded" … Cracker "Low" …Rihanna "Te amo" just to name a few.

I really think that if the person dancing is really feeling the beat of the song and/or connecting to the lyrics, than no matter the song choice it can be winner.  There have been videos where I didn't feel the song, but if the moves were fluid and the dance was captavating and I watched it right through w/o even realizing I didn't care for the song.

My greatest fear when I compete for the first time in July (Eek!) is that someone else will have a routine to the same song. So, i am sure I would be best served to find something old and obscure – unfortunately the song I like is very current – Cee Lo Green – Bigger City – so, hmmm, not sure how that will go! I get heartily sick of the songs I have learnt routines too – not because they are bad songs – but because I have danced a routine to it more times than I care to remember – particular non-favourites are: Beyonce, Beautiful Liar and Pink, Cos I Can….

I totally agree on the youtube thing. I too, have rocked it to some zeppelin and had to swap the audio.  I think the song that I have danced the best to, was the Ridin' Solo by Jason Derulo. I dont listen to the radio or really Top 40 at all, but for whatever reason, that one resonated, and I actually danced that song.  A few songs I like that are sort of random:

    Mary Jane by Alanis Morrissette

Hang You From the Heavens by Dead Weather

sorry hit something there, Amuse Boucher by Fischerspooner and Boys Will Be Boys by GoldFrapp.

Ultimately, I get just as tired of my favorites, but it doesnt affect how i feel about other peoples' dances unless the song really irritates me.  At which point I mute and continue. 🙂
