    Hey!
So, being the kind of person stuck to spins and wanting them to be the best they can be (I’m just not strong enough yet for climbs!) I have a question. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif
I’ve been working on my off-the-pole spins, where your legs do not help in the holding of the pole, and I’m finding that they are all so very slow! Is this a strength problem? I understand that I grip pretty hard when I do them, since I have nothing but my hands to keep me up, but really, I don’t see how this would hinder me SO much! Most of the time I don’t even get the spin all the way to the floor without some additional help, such as changing the spin part way through. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
I’ve found that I can pretty much do the Chair one-handed, which is awesome for me https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif …but still, it’s terribly slow! The Carousel is possibly the worst for speed, and I pretty much dangle at the end, unsure of whether I should just drop or…walk out, I suppose. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
Hopefully, I shall put up some videos soon, and you guys can let me know what I’m doing wrong! But for the meantime, if you have any possible hints and tips on how to: A) Gain momentum, B) Increase the amount of rotation (how many times you go around) and C) any neato transitions from one to the other you can think of!
I really want to get my spins the best they can be, and I want to practice at them even when I’m climbing like a pro! I rarely see that with most people who are super-good at the pole, so I want to try and make it a "thing!" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Momentum and increased rotation are pretty much the same thing. Couple things I found helped me were to push off the ground harder and more away from the pole than around it and also to hold my one hand staying on the pole lower than I would for most other spins.

I would really suggest working on strength work, pole holds and climbs. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rambo.gif Spins done on a static pole (especially spins done with lots of momentum) really require you to have a good amount of strength to prevent injury. I don’t feel that most spins (especially one armed) should even be attempted until the dancer is strong enough to do one pole climb. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

    Thanks Ladies!
Veena: I have, actually, been working on my pole holds, and technically I can climb up the pole without issue, I just can’t really do much up there but sit and…I think it might be called the crucifix? I’m not sure! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
Strength has always been something I’ve been going for, because without it I tend to fall apart really bad. My knees and shoulders being the worst…without regular workouts, particularly of those areas, they refuse to work and I feel very incapacitated. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_evil.gif
FreetheSun: I figured an increased amount of momentum would lead to more spin, but I also find that (strangely) even if I put more behind a spin that I can do easily, I pretty much get the same results! But, I will try the pushing away from the pole, instead of around it, and see how that goes! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
Once I get me that subscription again, I’ll get to the strength training a little more! You’d be surprised to find out how much the little things do, though. Shoulders back and down…gave me more strength than I expected, once I got used to it!

Something else you can check….make sure your not too close to your pole when your leading into your spin. A hip widths distance away is good, sometimes more depending on the spin. You’ll get it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif
