I’m trying to do the splits but there’s so many people say different stuff to do before hand, just wondering if anyone has any tips or ways that helped them and might help me😃 thanks

You want to know what really helped me? Alethea Austin’s Pure Splits DVD and 2 yoga blocks from Target or wherever.

There are a lot of different opinions about the best way to stretch for your splits.  Veena has lessons for that that you might want to check out.  I also second luvlee's suggestion of the Pure Splits DVD, although it might be a little difficult if you're starting out far from the floor.

I'm a pretty darn unflexible person, and the first part of my splits journey took a different route than most.  When I started, I was more than a foot off the floor, making it difficult to hold any kind of split position.  On the advice of my instructor, I started out doing my splits on a soft surface (like a bed), over a pile of pillows. (This is after a warm up and 30 min of prep stretching)  The idea was to really let the muscles relax and sink down as far as they could.  Over time I reduced the amount of pillows I used, until I was finally just doing it on the bed.  During this time, I also discovered that taking a hot bath beforehand helped greatly.  Gradually, my routine became to take a hot bath, stretch for 30 min (this eventually decresed to about 15 min), and then do my splits on the floor, using yoga blocks to hold my torso upright (important for stretching the hip flexors).  It took a year, but I made it to the floor eventually.

Anyway, here are some previous threads on the topic that have all kinds of information about different people's experiences, methods, etc:

I will also second AA pure splits I love it but before I got the DVD I would try them after a serious 20-30 run. That way my legs and body were really warmed up. These took about a few years and what perfected it finally was AA DVD. The lunging and straddles.
