  • Splits after broken hip?

Posted by sundcarrie on July 7, 2012 at 11:25 am

I broke my hip at age 31 (34 now) and I have been working very slowly towards doing the spits but I have quite a bit of hardware in my leg a large plate and 4 screws to be exact. As far as the doctors can tell I actually broke the top of my femur which was probably a tiny fracture but I pushed it until it snapped off. I worked out and I walked on it until I was dragging but I kept moving trying to tough it out.

Now I try very hard to listen to my body and while is still push my body hard I know the difference in muscle sourness and serious pain. I do really want to get to where I am more flexible and I would like to do the splits but I am wondering if it is even possible. I am mainly worried about knowing when to stop…will it be painful if I work gradually and then there is a point that I should not move past. Will I know or will I end up damaging myself? I don't know how this works and I am currently searching for a new doctor because the one I have now is useless she likes to give out scripts and order lots of tests and that is about it.

I am really hoping splits are possible if I work slowly and cautiously but I would rather not injure myself so much that I can't dance anymore. Of course I was hoping to work really hard and someday be able to compete at least a little but no splits would make that rough. There is nothing like the feeling I get when I master a move and competing would be a great rush.

I am in my mid- 40s and although I havent had a broken hip, I do have some serious hip and joint problems.  I am also one who doesn't listen to my body and I go far beyond what I should.  I am working on getting my splits (still far from it though) and I have learned I need to be very careful.  I make sure I am totally warmed up first.  I stretch myself to the point of soreness – NOT PAIN!!!  The next day I am sore but not terribly so.  If I am having trouble walking, I know I overdid it.

You should absolutely not feel pain after you stretch.  Do you get Veena's lessons?  She has a fantastic splits stretch and you will learn a lot from her.  She really explains things and lets you know how best to stretch.  Good luck!

Stevesgirl I just signed up two days ago for the lessons and I did so mostly for the streching videos because it was cheaper than buying a streching for pole video and it has the added benifit of breaking down some of the moves I already know but they could use a little work. This way I can focus on the new stuff in class. I guess my slow and cautious plan is all I can do if there is a pont that I can't go without pain then I know that it is the metal in my leg.

You will LOVE Veena's lessons.  She is so thorough in her directions.  I really hope you can get to the splits.  I am so far away from getting the splits and I figure it is because of my health problems but you have inspired me!  I admire you for trying to do it even with the problems you have.  I am sorry you had to go through that – especially at such a young age.  I wish you the best of luck!

Well I have finally found something I love doing so I am not going to give up. I honeslty have never felt better about myself. I feel sexy but more than that I feel a great sense of accomplishment even more so than I did when I graduated college with honors. I have been small and fit a few times in my life but never confident and I never really enjoyed working out before this. I felt depressed and or angry a lot before I started pole and now a good pole session gets rid of that so I guess I am addicted to feeling good about myself.

You should keep going like you said slowly and make sure you are not in pain. We will get there and if we can't get all the way there so be it but at least we can say we gave it our best shot!

Veena's lessons are great! I love the flexibility ones too.

Sundcarrie, consult with your new Doc about your flexibility and dance goals so they can advise you appropriately. I am really proud of you for being so determined and happy that you found something you love! Keep at it!
