  • Stretching for splits: Hips square or not?

I had Aline Kerber at my studio last weekend and had an interesting discussion with her.
I’m not experiencing any progress in my stretching allthough I’ve tried many different techniques, have visited several Workshops and read about stretching a lot.

She now told my I should just open up my hips and NOT keeping them square. This way she said it will be a lot easier. I was confused, because I’ve always been told to Keep my hips square.

    She argues, that
    – We don’t neet a square split
    – It makes you look shorter (which is obvious once you think about it)

So, what’s your opinion on this? What are your reasons pro or con?
I’m looking forward to an interesting discussion 🙂

My rule is when training square hips as it gives a better full stretch. For performing, open hips as it gives better lines and you and turn out the back leg and create nice lines even in heels 😊

This may not help but for me my flexibility was it a stand still until I started doing exercises to loosen up my lower back and doing Veena exercise called The Clam Shell. It has strenghted my deep hip muscles and loosed them up.

Interesting. Where is the clam shell lesson? Couldn’t find it using search.

Tacha, when I train for splits I do what Veena says- I train them square. You won’t get as flat so be ready for that. After I’ve stretched may square splits I do an unsquare split . It just makes you feel better to see your self get a flatter split. It’s just a self gratification thing to do after training a very unflat square split. Haha! And yes I do very unsquare splits while performing because you can get flatter and achieve pretty lines. but training for square splits will target those deep muscles that won’t get stretched otherwise. I’m thinking she meant for dancing / performing you don’t need a square split for the reasons above. 🙂
