Personally, I wouldn't do it. I would go to something like "open pole" at a studio, but not amateur night at a strip club….because I feel like that would give people the wrong idea, and plus that's not the kind of pole I like or like to do lol. I have nothing against exotic dancers, but that is the stereotype pole dancers are thrown into by doing pole…when really there is a WHOLE other side to it. I always stress that to friends/families who are not familiar with the pole I do, or am learning to do. At strip clubs, dancing isn't really about cool moves & inverts & strength….it's about basically being seductive & using dance to reference sexual stuff.
Its all up to what YOU want to do, but I am just saying in case you think it's gonna be the kind of pole you see on here, most men don't want to see that….and most likely the managers of the club are assuming most girls will be shaking their stuff on the pole, not doing a bunch of tricks lol. If you're okay with that kind of stuff though, and that's the way you use your pole, then go for it!

I have entered a few ameature contests before & never will again so I wouldn’t recommend it either because large majority of those ameature nights are fixed contests…they are usually strippers from other clubs or house dancers who enter the contest & win. Ameatures don’t have a true shot at winning because of that set up.
Steph has a good idea about finding a pole studio & attending open pole a couple times a month or you could find a local pole buddy to pole jam with. Polexia.com forum has a pole pals thread where you can post that you are looking for a pole buddy in your area. Also Skype jams with ladies here are alot if fun and great motivation as well 🙂

My experience has been that these ameature nights are nothing more than a ploy to find new girls to dance at the club. They really arent for people who are serious about poling.
If you want to compete, then look for the serious pole competitions… if you want to have some fun and "try out" the club… then go for it..
Besides, you start throwing out a bunch of pole tricks, then every one will know you are not really an amature.

Honestly, it all depends on why you're thinking about doing it, what you hope to get out of the experience, and what the club / show is like. Amateur shows can be a lot of fun or they can be super lame.
I've done probably around 15 or 20 amateur shows at 5 different clubs. My favorite ones are the shows that aren't structured as competitions. At those clubs, you just show up and get paid whatever that club pays for a standard stage set, plus you get to keep whatever tips the guys throw up on stage (and the tipping culture is good here). It's an easy way to make $100ish for 15 mins of work. (And honestly, I consider it more play than work.) I don't really care for the competition style ones, because most of the time you'll walk away with nothing to show for your time other than a bit of stage experience… which can be valuable, in and of itself. As I said, it all depends on what you're hoping to get out of the experience.
I would also like to add, dancing in amateur shows was the best thing I ever did for my self-esteem. It is such an honest compliment when a guy throws money up on the stage, for no other reason than he likes what he's seeing. They know they're going to get absolutely nothing in return for their money.
Anyway, that's my 2c. Most of the responses so far have been pretty negative on the amateur show thing, so I wanted to offer a different perspective.

Oh, for anyone that does decide to do an amateur show and wants to bust out impressive pole tricks… Make sure you check how stable the poles are and CLEAN THEM at the start of your set. You have no idea how well they're being maintained and what sorts of lotions girls have been wearing on stage before you got up there. Better safe than sorry!

I say go for it cause it could be a good experience for you, I have never done an amature strip night before but i have been to strip clubs before and it seems like it can be alot of fun. If you do go just be careful.

I actually did one last year, and I had a lot of fun with it! I think it all depends on what you're expecting to get out of the experience, and what kind of club you go to. Just know that the poles are usually kind of crappy (if I had worn heels my head would have touched the ceiling on stage – no way to invert or anything!), the audience could be sleezy, and you could regret it later. If you're prepared for this and still want to do it – go for it! I would recommend calling the club to getting as much info as possible up front (when do you have to show up, will you need to wear anything special, are you allowed to keep all tips from the stage, that kind of thing?).
Also, I would highly recommend bringing at least one friend along. I actually brought about 15 friends (including my husband), and it was so nice to have their support when I was on stage. Didn't hurt that the competition was decided based on audience applause either:P
(I made $230, plus bottle service with their most expensive vodka and free admission for myself and 6 friends for one month, so totally worth it imo.)

I agree that it depends on what you want to get out of it. If you go into it knowing that it's not a pole competition and that pole tricks may or may not even be possible on the club's pole (and you may not find that out until you get up on stage if the girl before you wears a lot of lotion) then you'll probably be fine.
Everyone here has given good advice. Find out the rules/policies of club and the amateur night in advance. Are you going to be required to take off a certain amount of clothing?(I've seen it vary from topless required to fully nude required) Is the stage pole spinning or static? Can it even be used? As kasanya said the poles may be too unstable to be climbed on or may have lotion on them. I've definitely experienced poles that had so many years of body lotion and oils on them that you couldn't clean them enough to get a good grip.
