    I thought the folk here might have some ideas on something that’s been vexing me lately. Even though I have a pole at home, I’m not terribly consistent in practicing on it. I think a lot of it stems from not having a clear plan for what I want to work on and how to structure it. It’s not like I’m suffering from lack of material: I subscribe to Veena lessons and nearly every day I come across a cool new move I want to learn from either via Instagram or Youtube. And we usually get a new move to try in the weekly class I attend. So, when I do practice, I’ve been fairly erratic – trying a new move until I get it, forgetting some moves… and I feel like I’m not really progressing as much because my practice is so unfocused. So, how do you sort through all the material out there and decide what to pursue and what to leave aside?

    As a lesson subscriber, have you tried using the 30 day take off program? If you are not a new dancer this program can still be used by a more advanced dancer. You would just replace any of the pole work for more advanced pole work, then you would have a daily outline to follow.

    I know how u feel, I have the same issue. I try and set a timer for pratices like 30 min a day then get a rough outline what I would like to work on the sunday before. Hope that helps!

    I structure my home practice kind of based on what I’m doing at my studio or what ever I really want to work on. I generally follow veena’s lessons as a guideline for what is appropriate for my level. However, I do skip around a little bit if I’m just not enjoying something or I see something I’d rather work on. I usually do a 10-15minute warmup, 45 minutes of tricks or spins, then a 5minute cool down. in those 45 minutes I usually choose 4-5 tricks I want to work on. I will do each trick 3-5 times each side, then I move on to the next trick. Right now, I am really focusing on combos and staying on the pole longer instead of individual tricks. I will know 2 combos I want to work on before I start, then maybe a couple of tricks I just really want to do. spend some of your practice on things you can already do. just try to make them prettier and just enjoy doing them. then spend a little time on something new or a little harder for you. I find that spending too much time on things I cant do is very discouraging. If you don’t know what the heck to work on and are short on time, do Veena’s pole strength routine. that will atleast keep you strong. If you have veena’s lessons then you have sooooo much to work with. just pick a warm-up routine, 4 tricks, then do a cool down. or do the 30 day take off if you are really having a hard time deciding. it is all outlined for you.
