    Hi Everyone!

I have been working on certifications from both Angel Discoveries and Vertical Dance, meanwhile looking at options for teaching. We have only 2 pole studios in the county, but I just learned that a very popular silks studio is purchasing poles and looking to start classes next year. I have been in discussions with them, and it looks like for the first month we will host open pole, one for juniors 13+ and one for adults. The juniors class will be more acrobatic, no shoes, no flirty moves, whereas the adult class, shoes will be optional, etc.

Does anyone have thoughts, tips, advice for teaching juniors? They already have a huge customer base of juniors at this point, so it is likely at least a few will try it out. Any advice would be appreciated!

Contact Matt from Jasmine Dragons. He is super sweet and has been teaching kids and teenagers for years.

When it comes to juniors it might be a tough sell even though it’s more acrobatic and no heels parents may get a little bent out of shape. We (San Diego)have a circus school that does Chinese acro pole and that is good for kids cause it’s acro and climbing and strength not really spinning and climbing and whatever else that parents will be accusing you of teaching their kids. And of course every child will need their parent to sign a waiver. But I think if you keep it Cirque Du Solei type of stuff then I don’t see why too many parents will have a problem with it.

Definitely keep it more acrobatic/ cirque stuff. I have taught teens and coached for 20 years. It is a MUST to have a very structured class where everybody is working on the same thing. If you don’t have enough structure you will be hearding cats the entire time. Also, be strict about students not doing moves outside of the plan for the day. Teens are easily distracted and think they are invincible so they are more likely to try things they are not ready for if they are allowed too much freedom or “play time”.

Yep my son is in an acro/pole class, ages 7 to 12. Mostly boys. They are being coached by a champion in pole theatre. There is a lot of cirque stuff, strength, acro, hand balancing. Some of the kids are preparing for competition. Their current trick is Spider-Man, a lovely no-hands invert.
