I didn't do a great job describing to my husband how to take the pics so I'll make sur ethey are more side on next time.

I've always wondered about the back leg in a split, i tend to have mine facing down. Almost got my box split, it's so hard!
-
The more your back leg is facing down, the more squared you probably are.

Only vinter and kobajo had true sq hips in this thread. Ladies sq those hips! Back leg needs to go into the floor, knee side down.

Hi Ladies!!! I wondered if someone could look at the stretching pics I just uploaded and tell me if I'm doing these right or wrong.
I read through the entire thread and I think I'm doing these stretches wrong, I'm not sure if I'm squaring my hips or not. How long should you hold the stretch when you do them??
-
It looks like you're not quite fully squaring your hips, your knee should be facing down, not to the side. I've been doing Veena's stretches and she holds them for 15 seconds in 3 different phases of each stretch (mild stretch, medium, and full), so 45 sec's total for each one. At the end she has you do the splits and hold for as long as you're comfortable. Hope that helps : / Other than the squaring issue they look good to me.

Thank you!!!!!! 🙂 Thank you Thank you!!! I'm gonna go upstairs and restretch!!!! xoxoxo

There is a huge discussion regarding positioning for the splits in 6 weeks thread and also on the differece between jazz splits and staright splits. If you are ever planning on doing this in a routine wearing shoes you probably will never be able to get square hips because your shoes will get in the way.

I have been working on my splits for a little over a year and I got my jazz split on my left side about 6 months ago. Long story short, I started training for square splits and couldn't go down. After taking a workshop with Marlo, I learned a simple trick that got me all the way down on my left side right away and recently, all the way down on my right side (in square splits). She taught us to lift our arms over our heads. To me, it concentrates the weight in the core, which is where you want to stretch. It worked for me and I wish I knew about it when I first started stretching because I think I would have been down in splits quicker.

Thank you Chem, I'm going to def check that out. Pole, I never thought of that before! I'm going to try that tomorrow when I stretch 🙂 I tried squaring my hips last night when I re-stretched but my knee was very uncomfortable so I didn't stretch for long. Is that normal guys??
