    Hi,

I've been stalking to this website for a month or so now and I thought it was about time I post something!!

I'm 22 (nearly 23) and I only started stretching in January and my progress was okay I suppose, I took it step by step and when I attempted my middle split after a long warm up and stretches I was 4-5 inches off the ground but I kind of just stopped there so I tried to force myself a little bit lower and I think I overstretched the other day and now my inner thigh hurts only when I try do the split. Now I'm back to 7 inches off the ground so I've lost all my progress and I feel discouraged. 🙁 I

dont think the pain or soreness is too severe as I only feel it when I stretch for my middle split!! I was wondering if you guys knew how long it would take me to recover and also if you've had a similar experience. What bugs me the most is that I've probably lost all the hard work I put into getting that low which is a big thing for me as I've never stretched before in my life!!! I wonder if I'll be able to get there again after I recover, if ever and if so does this mean all my work has gone to waste?

Hi Safetypin, if it was only the other day that you overstretched then you'll might find foam rolling and very very light stretching is best. See a Dr if it doesn't improve soon, and wait at least a week before you start flexibility training again.

I have MANY lessons that will help you stretch everything from your splits to your back! There are also foam roller lessons that massage the muscles. Using a foam roller isn't necessary but it sure feels great! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

If you don't have the lessons yet here is the Getting started lesson for both the Flexibility lesson and foam roller. All the lessons on the site are placed in order so be sure to start with the first one, this explains how to use the lessons.

most likely you've pulled a muscle, its a very common injury. the general treatment for any type of strain/sprain is rest, ice, and NSAIDs. Depending on how minor/severe the pull is it could take a couple weeks or a couple months to heal. rest it and ice it for a few days to a week, then start very very gentle stretching, massage and/or foam rolling. keeping it gently stretched and massaged will help prevent scar tissue from building up as it heals, which could make it harder to get back your flexibility. just don't stretch it or massage it too deeply, that could make the injury worse. listen to your body.

the NSAIDs are anti inflamatories, apririn, ibuprofen, naproxen (aleve). be aware that taking too much or for too long can lead to unpleasant side effects, if you're uncertain you can check with your dr. your body builds up a tolerance for them, so rotate through the three different types.

don't get too discouraged, it happens to a lot of people, and you can get your full flexibility back, it may just take a bit of time and patience. hope you feel better!

Thanks ladies. Its the worst thing ever – losing all that hard work all because I tried too hard!!! Im not using that leg as much to do stretches but Im still working on my right leg and hope I can do a front split with it. Im gonna look at Veena's tutorials – they do look awesome!! 🙂
