  • Thinner pole better for short legged polers?

Hey veeners! I am the proud owner of a 45mm TG expert pole and a 50mm TG expert pole. I use my 45mm at home but at my old studio, i much prefered the 50mm but i hadn't started doing inverts/skin grips yet. I only recently aquired my 50mm and don't have room for both poles so here is my question:

I understand that the 50mm have more surface to grip with your skin which can make it less painful and easier to grip but i have short legs (I am generally short at 5'4"). I've learnt that a thinner pole is easier to wrap around since there is less pole. So i'm wondering, in my case of having short legs n such would it be more beneficial to use my thinner 45mm or my 50mm now that i am getting more advanced in skin grips and inverts? Does it even matter or is it purely preference?

What are your thoughts? Any other shorties out there wondering the same thing?

I find smaller is easier. I am 5’2″ and have a hard time doing hip holds and Gemini Scorpio type moves on a 50 as it presses into my ribs.

I’m also on the shorter side (5’2”) but I don’t hold a strong preference either way. I can invert just fine on a 50mm as I do on the 45mm. There is more pole to grip with my legs on the 50mm so I feel like the 45s can be a little more painful, but I’m still getting used to the outside/inside knee hangs. No rib pain for me in the gemini.

A lot of it really comes down to personal preference do to the tricks you tend to gravitate towards. I don't mind dancing on any diameter pole, I like them all.  I find that some of them allow for different variations or more comfortable positioning than others. I like smaller diameter poles for things that involve using hands only. The larger 50 is great for legs and thigh holds, I like it for armpit holds as well….. and flags. For me the 45mm is the best of both worlds, not too large or too small. Really you can learn to work with any size pole though! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

    I’m 5’3. I have a 45 but I prefer 50. But a true poler can pole off any size 🙂

I disagree. I think we all need to work within out comfort zone and limits. I am very uncomfortable when I dance on a 50 and it bothers my wrists no matter how much I strengthen them. My body just doesn't work well with 50's, and I've been at this for 4 years. We are all true polers, with our flaws and limitations included. Better to respect your body's signals than to cause serious injury. If working on a 50 is what makes people a true poler, then that makes all my work for nothing. If you can find one diameter that works for you, work it. 🙂

I have a 50 and 45 and am now realizing I have a better hand hold on the diameter of 45. I am going to get a 40 sometime soon, excited for that.

I love my 45mm , I find eveything easier than on my old 50mm.  I'm just under 5ft 5  with small hands and love the 45mm for thigh holds layback etc .  I would love to try a 40mm as the grip would be great but I'm with Sensual in that you have to find a pole you feel comfortable with, whether it's a 38mm,40mm, 45, or 50mm I dont want to struggle with my 50mm when everything is easier on my joints with the 45mm.   I think X pole aren ow stating that the 45mm is the new standard size and alot of competion poles are 45mm .

@Sensualscimitar.  You read my post wrong.  I said a true poler can pole off any size.  Meaning if you pole off a 38 to 50.  It doesn't matter.  What ever you like.

So from what I hear it’s definitely completely individual. I’ll switch out my pole and try some stuff out. Maybe my short legs won’t be a problem maybe it will. Thanks for the input guys! I’m so happy to have such a good pole resource like this for my questions 🙂
