Toe Cramps
Posted by jeng on January 20, 2010 at 1:00 amAnyone else get toe cramps when they are pole dancing? I always seem to get them on the same 2 toes on one foot whenever I’m doing inverted holds which is not good. I’m drinking plenty of water while I’m working out.
Any suggestions.

I have foot cramps all the time when poling but I have foot issues anyway. I’ve heard of people eating bananas before poling and it has helped cramps. The potassium in the bananas helps. Have you tried that?

YEP! I almost drown in the deep end of a pool one time because of this problem. Eating bannanas will help or maybee a vitamin. I hate banannas so I had to put them in cerial or do smoothies, but NOW I love them because I just got use to the taste I guess.

I agree – make sure to get enough K. Potatoes and OJ work if you don’t like bananas.
AND… milk! Get more calcium. I could explain it on a cellular level (sodium/potassium pumps and the role calcium plays) but, *yawwwnn* who needs that kind of excitement in their life? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_study.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif -
coconut water is a godsend. more potassium than bananas and keeps you hydrated too!

Yes, yes! Double yes!!! I’ll be doing (what I think is a) cool pose when all my toes cramp up.. causing me to fall off the pole sometimes!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif It sucks!!!
My problem is from having very tight calves and (probably related) overpronation in running etc. Trying to point my toes in pole dancing seems to bring on the toe cramps!! I have to take a minute to stretch my calves deeply to get rid of it. Have had this problem since I was a kid!!! (obv. havent been pole dancing since was a kid, but always had toe, foot and calf cramps!!)
So, in my experience.. muscular imbalances in the legs and feet have a lot to do with toe / foot cramps. A chiropodist / podiatrist / physio visit might diagnose underlying imbalances.. then you can find exercises / stretches to try to sort it out!
I’m such a banana, I totally forgot about the magnesium tip! This thread has just reminded me once more to try to eat bananas!!!

I had the same overpronantion thing from running Dee. That was one of my issuse that caused me to need surgery and I’m hoping that the cramping will be relieved now that my foot is fixed.

Foot/toe cramps can also be caused by how you are holding your point/flex.
directing the position by your heel not the top of the foot.
so when pointing your foot in a hooked or pinched position will cause a nerve and muscle cramp.
I was shown a neat trick to stop the cramps in my foot on the leg holds from my old instructor.
instead of pointing your toes by pushing the toes down…lift the heel up. prime mover change. this allows a different group to control the action.
pushing the toe causes the back of the calf to be used.. Pulling the heel allows the front flexor to work instead.
another point….calf compression against pole can cause cramping as well…when in any lower leg contact with the pole..be sure to position it ABOVE or BELOW the calf ball…direct force compression of that muscle on moves will cause compression seperation..and can lead to permanent damage. one of the girls who used to teach at my old studio is now unable to perform ANY calf hold with her right leg due to improper teaching of the outside leg hang and butterfly mount. She has permanent seperation in her right calf due to banging it on the pole during her learning. She had no prior injury.
