  • Upcoming Performance… Not feeling well about it.

I’ve mentioned in a description of my recent two videos that I am to be in an upcoming performance on December 14th. It’s a burlesque/pole show, and it is 1920’s themed. I signed up for four one hour long classes that will prep me to be in the show. However, I signed up for a class that is brand-spanking new beginner pole. Which I am not. So I called and asked what kinds of things that we will be doing and when she asked a few moves I could do she said that if I was good enough she could give me a little solo piece. I really want that to happen, because my mother will be there seeing me perform for my first time ever, and a few of my work friends will be there, too.

I ended up having to call again today to ask about shoes, and I asked what kinds of things to expect (I hadn’t been to a class in a long time). She told me basics and then realized that I was the person she mentioned a solo to. And she said that during the first class, she would “give me an assessment of my skill level”, to see if she wants to give me a solo (the way I worded it sounds mean, but it wasn’t!). And now I’m freaking out about it. She said that to her, I sound like a Pole Level 2 (I said I had my Gemini and Scorpio). I didn’t know what that meant for her studio, and I can’t find a description on her site. But the picture for Pole Level 1 is a girl doing a closed Gemini (I can do that), and the picture for pole level 2 is a split grip ayshea I(I’ve never even tried that). And I’m really freaking out. And pressuring myself. I feel like I had to have an ayshea down by November 20th (the first class, and my assessment), or else I won’t be able to get the solo. PLUS, I know how to do moves – I don’t really know how to “dance”. Especially sexily, like the piece is going to be.

I’m not sure what to do. I’m also not sure which moves to work on next… I don’t know which will be best for me to learn. I know if I can’t do well enough to get a solo I will be really hard on myself. I will feel disappointed in myself… I’m just not sure what to do. :/

I think the Ayshea is a pretty advanced move. It takes lots of strength. It seems a little much for a pole level 2 class. Do they have other levels?

Yeah, there’s Basic, Pole One, and Pole Two. I’ve never tried and Ayshea, but just looking at it, I don’t have the skills necessary. But that’s the move that was in the Pole Two picture. I told her I had a tuck/v invert, gemini, and my scorpio, both closed. And then she said that I sound like a level two. :/

Most studios when designing their website grab stock photos off the internet to make their site look flashy. She probably just liked that picture and thought it was an advanced move without really putting much thought into it.

I pay for and use stock photos on my website. There’s a lot more to designing a website than most realize. Especially when it comes to photos. If you’re able to pay for a photographer and obtain legal authorization to use their work/featuring students in images waivers/etc and get the dimensions to fit your website theme’s design and dimensions all while maintaining the integrity of the image and keeping your site looking professional and clean- then go for it. Many studios pay a lot of money for their websites and often paying for photos that reflect the nature of their business is just part of owning a business. Many of us aren’t web designers by trade and are often making do with what we can to salvage operational costs at every expense. If you have major concerns about the curriculum base on the photo representing the class, address these concerns with the instructor/owner. Most likely it may not be a true representation of the level curriculum an just a photo on the website used as visual marketing.

I think you’ll just have to go and see how it all turns out. There’s such a variation when it comes to what a “level” is, so try to stay calm. Meet with the studio and see how it goes. Let us know how it worked out! 🙂

I have no issues with sites using stock photos for general info. lol

If pole two is the highest level offered by that studio then that’s where everyone is going to end up once they have mastered all the pole one skills. So, by default, it may be something of a mixed level class with people who have just “graduated” from pole one all the way through people who would be in advanced classes at other studios. So the picture might accurately represent just one of the pole two students. It’s also very possible that ayesha is a move that is taught in pole two (especially if it’s the highest level the studio offers) and you’re not expected to know it when you walk in, so I wouldn’t stress about making sure you know it before you go!

I think everyone has good points that I failed to mention as well, especially Chemgoddess’s one about just liking the image. Unless you are weak at fundamentals, don’t sweat being in level two, even if Ayesha is on the syllabus. Even if this class is super difficult for you physically, it is going to introduce you to new postures and transitions and build strength so you can be better when you perform in the show. There is going to be something you love and excel at that you just might want to work into your routine. 🙂 This will be good for you as long as you focus on the possibilities and the things you can do. I think maybe you are just stressed about performing (who wouldn’t be, right?) and are focusing on the possibility that you will HAVE to do this advanced move and fail instead. Just let the Ayesha go and visualize on your performance and consider this level 2 class as an unopened book with new moves to discover and learn.

I just want to reiterate what everyone else has said. Relax about the aysha, it sounds like it’s probably in her level 2, but that doesn’t mean you have to be able to do it yet. It just means that you will be able to learn it in that level. As far as the solo goes, explain to her that it means a lot to you and she may be able to help you coreo something regardless of what level you end up in. 🙂
Good luck with your assessment, and remember to relax.
