A friend of mine owns a Crossfit-style gym and he focuses heavily on mobilization (flexibility of joints, not just muscles) and injury prevention, so sometimes I ask him what I can be doing to prevent hurting my shoulders and wrists in pole. This week, he introduced voodoo bands to me, and I might be in love! I told him how my wrist had been bothering me, I suspected from overgripping on my 50mm*, and he wrapped this long rubber band from the base of my wrist up to about 2/3 of my forearm. It was tight and compressed, and I did some stretches and worked it for about two minutes before taking the band off.

I gotta say, my wrist felt way better for the whole day yesterday! Even today, it didn’t bother me as much as it usually does. More info at the link below. I’m not sure I completely understand why it works, but my first try felt good enough that I might buy a pair of these for myself to use on my ankles, wrists, shoulders, and knees.

Just wanted to share in case this helps anyone else! If you know more about it, please share!

*I asked the same guy how to un-train this bad habit of overgripping and how to teach my future students to not get this habit in the first place. He thinks a good cue might be to tell people, “Grip it like you’re trying to break it.” If you hold a bar out in front of you and think about trying to break it, something about that cues you to line up the bones in the wrist better. I’ll try it for myself for a while before I suggest it next time my friends come over for pole.
