WHEN to train for flexibility
Posted by Runemist34 on September 22, 2011 at 12:38 pmJust wondering, during your regular workout routine, when do you get the best results for flexibility training? Before the heavy lifting (strength training), or after it? I know it should always be done when one is warm, and I know that general stretching should be done after the workout to keep your muscles from getting tight, but…
After hearing Veena say around here that there IS a difference, I started wondering!
Unfortunately right now, I cannot afford the Veena lessons, as much as I would like to (especially the strength and stretching ones!), and google isn't playing nice.

For flexibility training….I always do it AFTER strength training. Your going to need to stretch after anyway to maintain flexibility, so if you have the time might as well do a flexibility session!! I personally don't have time for that after I train with weights or pole, so I only stretch each muscle group after a workout. I stretch in between sets as well, I like to lift on the heavy side and I'll tighen up if I don't (my hamstrings are the worst). I do all of my flexibility training at night when the kids have gone to bed.

Sounds good…
I hate to ask, but…er, what IS the difference between stretching and flexibility training? I guess the training is pushing a little father and trying to bring the muscle longer, whereas stretching is less intense?
Seriously, I wish I could afford your lessons. Maybe I'll have to play with my money, see if I can afford even one month! Even that is helpful 😉

For the purpose of the lessons…the term Stretching: means to maintain.
Flexibility training: means to increase. But most people just call everything stretching as a general term https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Hehe, thank you Veena https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif
With hope and care, perhaps we'll see me up on the pole and doing some amazing things soon! I'm determined, but also going at this in a much more…er, controlled way https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_safesex.gif Perhaps I won't burn out this time, and I'll be able to motivate myself better!

It's great to see your dedication Runemist!

Veena:
I have a question for you too – I'm not sure if you can help with this, but I have a medial hamstring muscle that I've overstretched slightly. (The muscle is so far medial that it almost feels like an adductor…) I get a sharp pain in that muscle when I try to stretch it, even warm. Foam rolling helps, but I sometimes pay for it the next day. It's been injured since August. A doctor told me that I could rehab it gently, and the pain point was my stopping point and to back off from there. I've been trying to rehab it, but it doesn't seem to be improving. Sometimes it doesn't even seem like I'm maintaining my level of flexibility, and it's just so tight and painful… Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? I don't know if you've ever had something like this happen and have some kind of recovery routine or rehab schedule.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Good to know Veena.
Whats neat is that I always thought there was a limit to what I(or everyone) could do. I already to the splits three ways and am super flexy. I can do many of Alethea's moves and some of the others in the top, but when you watch people like Dima Shine and Alethea and others, I am just amazed at what the body can do. I wish I was in an area that delivered more of the classes that I am looking for. I would love flexibility training to push my already flexy movements even further. Just don't know where to begin…

Polecat88- I would love to have a pole/flexy jam! This weekend doesn't really work for me either, so that's okay 😉 I've never actually done one, to be honest, so I guess I wouldn't really know what to do! But I'm willing to give it a go!

MissKitty, its not really within my scope of practice to tell you exactly what to do. But I have pulled my Semitendinosus and this is what I did. Heat and more heat….then….Lot and lots of foam rolling and tennis ball rolling. The tennis ball hurts like you wouldn't believe but it was very helpful. I only did gentle stretching, in between rolling on the ball, and only to the point where it didn't hurt. This went on for about a week, Then once I started to notice the hamstring wasn't hurting in my daily life I began working on flexibility and strength training again. For a long time I had to warm it and roll it really really well before I did anything. Pulls/strains all take time to heal, I still have trouble with my foot and that was over 7 months ago! But it is getting better slowly……

Roamy, do you know the advanced Valentino Brothers DVDs?

I only use their beginner DVDs which work up to the splits. The pics on the advanced DVDs look pretty crazy to me https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

mailto:.@RoseMay,
I think they are going to be at a competition judging in New York in Oct.
I heard of them once(think it is the same brothers).
I actually do a lot of those stretches now. There is not one person in the time that I have done pole(6 years) that is more flexy than me.I have seen a couple of the "pros", but haven't met them; i had some direction from some of the big names in the top in the form of classes, but the ones I met were at my level or under unfortunately( I am excited about a few and have been waiting forever to do classes with them) . I compete myself often and do shows all year(except for right now-prego-haven't done a show since I was 12 weeks), so it is really hard for direction. I could try these though because so far, these look like my best bet!
Thanks!

Thanks veena. I know you can’t really tell me what to do, and I did see a doctor, it just helps to know what you (and other people have done and how long it took so I have an idea of what to expect. It’s frustrating to work with it and work with it and feel like there’s no improvement. Thank you for sharing- I appreciate it. And I’ll try the tennis ball. 🙂

No problem, if you any questions please feel free to email me. The tennis ball works wonders for me!
