I have seen some really beautiful video editing from you all…..so what are you using?  I just downloaded one which I had a play with and got frustrated with as it was too complex.  I have mastered my all time fav move and wanted to show you.

I am actually a filmmaker/editor/special effects person and I would suggest for your first step beyond Windows movie maker, you have 2 best choices.

    1.  IF you can use a mac for editing, you will find the most user friendly yet feature rich app is iMovie (you can DL it free)

    2. IF you're a PC user, the next step can be Sony Vegas (more difficult to learn), or MAGIX (beginner friendly with alot of presets). PC users don't have much choice beyond windows movie maker for a free videoeditor, BUT it is worth searching for a digital copy you can buy for less.

    3. @Legs4Days – The best starter tutorials for movie maker I've even used for students is Papa John and TechEase:  http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Online-Tutorials.html

http://etc.usf.edu/te_win/movies/windowsmm.html – make sure you have updated java/flash and permissions set to be able to view the videos here. ..hope this is a good start for you.

Most of my own video and film projects are not online but I have a small collection at Vimeo if you are interested. let me know and I'll shoot you the link privately.

@Legs4Days – software- I forgot to give you the next few. Final Cut and Pinnacle are very popular amongst amateur filmmakers and hobbyist friends of mine. I do not use them but have tested Final Cut and it was an awesome looking interface. There are tons of applications, BUT the ones I list for you are designed for full editing capabilities , not just cut/paste, linear editing and are compatible with other apps for importing effects. so there you go..a few more!

Thanks so much! Currently downloading my 30 day free trial of Magix. Will let you know how it goes. I actually record my videos on the iPad. Is it worth looking into apps on that and edit the videos on there?

@Mummy – Great choice. you will Love MAGIX. It has so many cool effects that are easy enough for a beginning editing enthusiast! Have fun and DO let us know how you like it.   For the iPad – You should be able to get iMovie for the iPad for only 5bux as long as you have enough space. The tradeoff is, editing on a touch screen could be very frustrating. You'd have to keep it simple, I'd imagine.

@ThatGirl99-Thanks so much! We have the icon for movie maker but it is not on the computer…I thought the icon only was there after it has been downloaded no?

@Legs4Days – search your "program files" folder to be sure it's not already installed. The desktop icon may have just lost it's link to the location of the .exe (the application).  IF you find you don't have it–> just download and follow the directions to install.  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview

My windows movie maker is on my computer but wont let me use it. As soon  as I open it theres a message saying it has to close and asks about sending a report. Any ideas on how to fix this? Any free editing programs online or for install?

I used to use windows live movie maker, but absolutly hated it, since it always crashes on me, and several people have had this issue, and Microsoft hasnt done much to try at fix whatever it is. I use potoshop for my job, so not long ago, I realized I could edit my videos with that aswell.

@Bassaddict – that message means your moviemaker is crashing or not loading properly. close all other programs you are using, try a restart, and try to check your 'task manager' to make sure you close the application completely b4 trying to run it again. You might want to Do a scan to clean up any malware…if you haven't done it on schedule recently. unfortunately moviemaker is chronic for causing conflicts on the PC with other apps. It is also useful to change your system settings to "run background apps" as your priority when using WMM or it has a habit of freezing or hanging your whole system. I dont use it because it has too many issues. but if you have to use it, make these arrangements first. uninstall/reinstall may be your best bet if its not loading and you've never even used it before. best to just start fresh in that case.
