Will I ever get there?
Posted by Jpolelove on August 24, 2011 at 11:56 pmAs I begin my journey to Pole Dance. I see woman and all these tricks that are perform, and here I am beginning with Fireman and the sunwheel. How long will it take me to get into all these tricks formats as I see on here and youtube. Its seems like forever : ?

Don't worry JPoleLove! You will make more progress than you ever thought possible! I don't have a dance background and in 2 years I have progressed to a point where I have become an instructor, have performed in front of groups of people and have done moves that I never thought I'd be able to do!
It's hard to focus on the now when we're looking towards what we want to look like one day, just don't forget to enjoy the journey you're in, the now, the present moment.
And welcome to this awesome sport!

Jpolelove- Alethea just recently had a video up where she was interviewed and mentioned this topic. Pole is not just about the "tricks" but the journey. Enjoy the steps that it takes to learn these things properly without rushing into them. Take pride in the fact that you are able to do a fireman and sunwheel….I have ladies that have taken a few classes and are still having issues with this. Everyone progresses at different rates. Enjoy the feeling of your body getting stronger and the determination it takes just to be able to achieve each and every move. Most of the people (like 95%) of them start where you are starting. The tricks that you see on youtube videos are the outcome of many hours/months/years of training and perfecting. At some point in time you are going to wish that you could go back to these days.

Everybody starts somewhere. Some people have a gymnastics or dance background, and they may progress faster or get further as far as tricks, but some of the most beautiful, fluid dancers I've seen don't have background in anything but pole, and if you talk to them they'll talk about how much they struggled with simply holding up their body weight at first.
Beyond that I can't say it annnnny better than chemgoddess did, so I won't try. 😉
If you look up Alethea, look for her "Bleeding" video on youtube–she talks about how refreshing and fun it was to do a dance that wasn't all about tricks and where she could just dance and have fun, and if you watch it you'll see that she only does a few tricks.

I agree with the previous ladies!
I just don't understand that why is so easy for me to encourage others and give endless support and in the same time I can't do the same for myself…I feel down so often and can't trust for my arms either. I know that I should be happy for little moves that am able to do. To watch my transformation even if it's so slow…The hardest thing is to believe in ourselfs and practice this menthal exercise as well as pole dancing, I think. Someone just told me: "with a strong mind anything is possible"- let this be our quote! We'll get there. One day.

I have to agree. There are lots of things I can't do. Invert on my own, some spins are hard, but no matter what, I have fun and I always look forward to the next thing I can do. I will always encourage my dance mates along the way and they always seem to celebrate my little victories when I have them. I couldn't imagine living without pole!

You will get there if you stick to it. I am always mesmerized by videos, and my instructors when they demo what we will be learning in class that day. Sometimes I get it, and other times- I don't. It is really hard for me not to beat myself up in the moment, but I just remind myself, that everything comes with practice. I literally tell myself "Homework", log it in my journal, and practice it during the week. I've also come to the reality that I may not be able to do everything (right now), and there are tons of other things that I do very well!
The other thing to remember is to have fun. Getting to the pole is the most fun, and having a warmed up body will allow you a much better, and prettier dance flow. And if you practice the strengthening exercises regularly, you'll reach your goals much quicker! Keep us posted, and be patient.

Jpole, I agree with the other ladies as well as understand what you are going through. I have no background in dance or gymnastics…just natural clumsiness. I usually don't get new stuff right away. According to Veena's lesson's I'm intermediate, but I still consider myself a beginner. I have watched tons of videos and even have a Youtube "wishlist" for things to do as my strength progresses. I'm sure Veena will continue to add to the lessons which will coincide with my wishlist items. There are so many things that can be done with spins…like putting them together for a combo. I am still working on that myself.
Don't get down on yourself. Keep practicing and post some videos. I used to be intimidated about posting videos because I couldn't climb or invert. But it's good feedback *point my toes* on hand positioning, how to work the pole on spin, and just to track your progress. I don't even know how to edit my videos yet and do all that cool stuff.
xoxoxo ~see ya soon

Thanks for starting this thread! It’s a beauty 🙂
Totally agree with what chemgoddess wrote- she was spot on.
I’ve started getting increasingly hard on myself so I’ve just bought myself a ‘pole dancing journal’.
I document realistic goals to work on, what I actually did work on and most importantly what I achieved or progressed on. No matter how small- it’s really been helping me to see that yes I AM progressing and a lot faster than what I thought!
