Working out during lady cycle/ovulation question
Posted by Janae B on May 24, 2015 at 1:05 pmIs it normal to be really lazy during your period/ovulation? I have been pretty lazy and have had no motivation to workout or pole. I just tried to pole and ten minutes later I’m laying on the floor wondering what the heck! What do you ladies do to fight through this? Haha!

Don’t stress, this is pretty normal. Hormones have a huge impact on your body and mind. HUGE. When I started pole dancing a year ago I was confused like you are now because I noticed I could do certain things only during the first half of my cycle but not during the second. I didn’t know what was wrong until over time I realized it was a monthly pattern. I’m not a specialist when it comes to medical questions but I think all this ovulating and bleeding and preparing for conception again and again is a lot of work for a female body. And I feel we should be kind to our bodies and listen to what they need. So when I notice that my hormone levels are changing and I am lacking strength and motivation I don’t fight through this. I take a rest because I know my body will be grateful and surprise me with a new trick when I get back on the pole a few days later… 🙂

I know that, for me, I become severely anemic during my cycle. I’m anemic anyways, which is why I take a supplement (Carnation Instant Breakfast!), but during my cycle it becomes worse because of all the nutrient loss through the blood. It can take a big toll on the body!
And, sometimes I have very tired core muscles. My lower back, in particular, works hard and constantly during that process and can become weak and tired very easily.
So, I still do try to keep up with my exercise, but I tend to sleep a lot during that time, and feel sluggish and unmotivated.I will also point out (there was a thread about this somewhere on the forum!) that our pain tolerance is often lower closer to our cycle, so this can also be a discouraging factor in pole dancing.

It doesnt affect me personally but i wouldnt be surprised if the hormonal vhanges affect others. I have heard somewhere that making sure you get all your vitamins can alleviate such symptoms.

This is totally normal. I feel exatly the same.
I noticed that 2-3 days before my period, it was not really a good idea to train and invert. However, stretching and doing short light yoga sessions help to prevent the PMS. As a side info, recently, I heard that eating some red patatoes few days before the period, helps you to avoid any sugar cravings. For me it really works and also stabilizes my emotions…
Few years ago, I discovered a book, which helped me a lot to understand the different phases of the cycle and how I experience them emotionally & energetically. Honestly, I try to “organise”, whenever it’s possible, my activities around these 4 phases.

If you want to learn more and use the different phases of your cycle to your advantage and not fight with your body or mental state, I highly recommend it….
Basically, the period is the so called “reflective phase”, which invites you to take your time to reflect, restore your energy, tune into your inner world, your intuition… it’s a natural meditative state. Be gentle and kind with your body and yourself. Make time for extra sleep and relaxation. It’s not the best time to socialize…In general, slow down and do less…. You will have the energy back in a few days….

Very normal. I never pole or exercise the 4-5 days of my period I’m too zapped & weak & cranky lol

I get it too, but I try not to miss my classes no matter what. The exercise + the endorphins + the fact that I really, really LIKE the pole makes me feel a lot better during and after the class.
It’s specially difficult dragging my ass to the studio… but when I get there I just forget about everything else.

I’ve been lucky enough to avoid big differences in pain tolerance/energy/mood swings. My big thing is that I get AWFUL cramps and extremely heavy flow for 2-3 days of my cycle. I’ll avoid going to work on those days if I can, but sometimes I can’t avoid it. If I had class that day I would probably try to go to a class later in the week instead. It’s definitely best to rest if you can.
