Wrist Gaurds
Posted by shelbsy33 on August 23, 2013 at 5:35 amHey Ladies,
So I recently injured my wrist and what I thought was a severe strain is actually jammed carpals and some tissue damage. My RMT says that I can still pole (I'm an instructor and trainer) but because I am on the pole so often I should look into wearing wrist guards.
Obviously I don't want the guard to interfere with the grip on my palm. Is there specific pole wrist guards? I noticed mighty grip has some but I've never really used them…
Any thoughts/suggestions would be helpful!

I know there was a thread a little while back about wrist wraps. Basically you want the same type that bodybuilders use. There are also ones made for bowlers but a lot of those are pretty stiff (which may be a good thing for this instance). Do you need it for support or to stop wrist rub?
Ahhhhh…should have known it was Amy that blogged about them! http://aerialamy.com/blog/2012/05/02/strength-wraps/

BTW, you can check out lots of different types of wrist guards at a sporting goods store. Walmart may even have some. Did your RMT suggest any specific type of guard?
These are super stiff: http://www.bowlingindex.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BI&Category_Code=WS&Product_Code=WR-RCM
These have more give: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-s-Gym-Pair-of-Wrist-Wraps/21672527?findingMethod=rr
Ones made for yoga: http://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Neoprene-Support-WristBands-Pilates/dp/B005U2BE9Y
There are a lot of options out there. And I have seen a LOT of people wearing these. I may even invest in a pair myself because we do a lot of yoga type stuff as a warm up and some days my one wrist is not happy with me.

I have to wear wrist guards every time I pole. I use and love the mighty grip ones.

I often wear wrist wraps, I found them through aerial amy's blog too 🙂 my physio had recommended me to wrap my wrists while I train to ensure I had proper support while I pole and to compliment the wrist strengthening exercises I do. I find they help me a lot!

Wow so many replies! Thanks for all the help!! I'll check out the Aerial Amy post and go from there, she usually knows what she's talking about. And if you say the mighty grip ones work than even better- I can buy some pole swag while I'm placing an order 😉
Thanks for all the suggestions!

I have tendonitis in both wrists so wear wraps/guards almost all the time I pole. They may or may not really do a lot (some do, some don't) other than make you conscious of being careful of your wrists – which is enough for me, and I have seen an improvement. A lot of twisted grip is out, or I need to be really warm in the wrists (lots of wrist exercises). Also, consider doing baths for your wrists in the morning – it will help with inflammation. Ie, get two buckets, dip your arms up to the elbows in very cold water for 30 second, then warm/hot water (not so it scalds) for 3 minutes, repeat 3 times. I am sure it doesn't work for everyone, but it has helped me.
I actually use wrist supports that I picked up from my local chemist/drug store – they work well, but I am going to try out the strength guards next as I think they will last longer as sweat deteriorates the ones I use.
As well as the ones Chem listed, there are also a lot of weight lifter oriented ones which are more a band rather than a wrap.
A lot of people I know also just use good old tape 🙂

Oops – I meant to mention the ones I wear are 'sort of' like the yoga ones Chem linked to 🙂

I definitely already do ice baths!! I’m a trainer too so I really just think its a lot of over use. I could definitely spend more time warming my wrists up in the morning though before jumping right in.
I just ordered the strength straps that aerial any recommended so ill see how those work out. I love that their washable too because ill be using them a lot 🙂
