Wrist pain?
Posted by dancing in the gray on July 14, 2012 at 12:06 pmI keep getting awful wrist pain! It started in my non dominant wrist, and now I am having problems with both. I use coflex wrap for support during class and stretch them.
My dominant wrist now has a grinding, crunchy feeling like it needs to pop. It will release, then be fine for a few rotations, then it builds back up. Any suggestions?

I have terrible wrist pain too…while im no doctor, I know wrist pain is common among pole dancers and gymnasts, due to the excessive pressure we put on them…it may be some tendonitis, in which case do lots of wrist warm up and stretch each finger back and forward a few times a day…i know my pain is a mix of tendonitis and a cyst on my joint caused by too much pressure…be sure you allow yourself enough time in between training and more importantly, see an orthopedist or a hand specialist who can inveatigate further…i know how frustrating the pain can be since we rely on our wrists so much in pole, but the sooner you get a proper diagnosis, the sooner you can really enjoy pole again! Hope this helped some 🙂

Many times immediate wrist pain is something of a more recent event caused by a minor sprain which will heal nicely with rest and ice.
Since you mention that both wrists are exhibiting like symptoms then you might look into what could be causing possible repetitive stress. The wrist is such a complex joint mechanism with many possibilities to consider from torn carpus to cysts. If your pain has been around for a long time especially with no sign of improvement or there is past history of wrist trauma then I'd certainly agree with Jeanie Maire and make sure you get a qualified physician to look at it.

Wrist pain could be any number of things. So it's hard to be of assistance there. But I did recently figure out that you can use one of those sleeves that's supposed to chill wine to ice it! Helped me a ton last time I had pain!

my wrist pain worsens with even sllight computer use now and after too much pole. My Dr. gave me a wrist immobilizer brace for now inbetween exercise, pole.ect. It between my thumb and index finger and up to mid-upper forearm. Just got it today. Planning on using it when at home and some at work maybe,
we'll see

i dont want to be the one who over reacts, but it would be a very good idea to see a doctor, preferably someone who specialises in orthopaedics. as a poler, you NEED your wrists to be in good condition, and so you need to take care of them. you need to know if there is damage there or any reason for weakness, and you need to know what you are and are not allowed to do.
I had a bad injury last October that left me barely able to move my hand. After seeking medical advice i splinted it, iced it, took painkillers and rested. Finally got an appointment to see a specialist who told me splinting was making it worse and i shouldn't be resting too much – advised me to get back on the pole. I still get pain, but it's lessening, and after chatting with the specialist I know what good pain and bad pain are. An MRI showed me what was going on and gave me more information about the condition of my wrist.
so… every injury is different, every wrist is different – you need to get it checked out.

I think you should have it checked out I have sore wrists from time to time but a day or two off and I am back to normal. There is a nice woman in my class that will not do the split grip because she fractured a bone in her forearm and didn't know it. She just kept going at it so she suggests being very careful as do I after breaking my hip and walking on it for almost 2 months. I don't mess around with chronic pain any more.
It could be nothing but it is better to be sure!

Thanks ladies! It normally takes my wrists a week or so to start feeling better when I have the pain. The crunching/grinding feeling has gone, and it's no longer cracking.
Next time I am at the doctor I am for sure going to get them checked out. Sometimes I think I just work them too hard.

I haven’t had a chance to read all the responses yet, but I have had this problem intermittently. I noticed I had the most pain when I went to visit a friend for a week and played on her 50mm instead of my usual 45mm. I found that it really needed rest, alternating ice and then later heat. The wrist conditioning exercises here help me more than anything in the long run. I find I get the most pain from not doing the hand and wrist conditioning. Also not having my wrist in a more neutral position will certainly make me sorry later. I recently bought strength wraps, wrist wraps. Aerial Amy talked about them in her blog and it makes such sense to have more wrist support. I have only used them so far with yoga since they are new and I am just now 5 weeks post-op. They feel like they will be perfect!!! You might oughtta give em a try!

I have to second what JelliCrew said about the strength wraps…I bought them after reading Aerial Amy's blog (and suffering with ongoing wrist pain during poling for over 2 years) and they've been a lifesaver!
