So I have a chrome Xpert Xpole, and want to use it more often. However putting it up ad taking it down causes me to not be able to take advantage of it as much as i’d like. This is due to the extra time it takes to put it up and put it away. I would like to just leave it up, but I have cats. I’m concerned about them trying to scratch my pole. One tries to scratch the corner of walls which is where this worry comes from. My pole instructor told me she does not think he could scratch it. That the pole is something he wouldnt be able to really use because he would just slip off. She also said she doesn’t think his claws could scratch it. That metal could easily scratch chrome but that nails shouldnt be able to. What do you guys think? I really want to leave my pole up but I also dont want it to get scratched to a point of not being able to use it either.

I have 4 cats. None of them have tried to scratch my pole. They send to rub themselves against it when walking past so it’s only their fur and dirt which may transfer to the pole. I really can’t see a cat scratching a pole.

We have a cat that hangs out in class and he only rubs on it not scratches it. Also I used to have a cat, and I just can’t imagine a cat wanting to scratch metal.

If you’re really concerned why not buy/make something to protect it, a tube of sorts…

Thanks for the input. 🙂 I never thought about a tub. Thanks.

    Hey there!
I’ve had a total of three cats around my pole- I never take it down. Whether powder coated or stainless steel, none of them have ever shown it much interest.
I don’t think a cat’s claws would be able to scratch the pole, especially considering I don’t think they would be able to get the kind of hook onto it in order to exert much force. Cats have most force when pulling down, and when reaching upward, pulling down also requires leaning into the thing, and given that chrome is often fairly slippery, they wouldn’t be able to lean into it in order to get the force to pull down.
Also, the only thing that has ever scratched any f my poles is metal. They’ve had fingernails, wood, furniture, and other things crash into them by accident, and not a mark was left. Only metal 😉

Looking at it scientifically, on the Mohs scale of hardness where 1 is talc and 10 diamond, a cats claw is about 2.5 and chromium is 8.5, so the claw cannot mark the pole but the pole could mark the cats claw. The only way the cat could mark the pole is if grains of sand were stuck on the cats paws and it rubbed the pole with them which I suppose is theoretically possible.
I have a brass pole in my house which marks very easily, so to protect it I just clip on a piece of coloured pipe insulation when not in use. It looks good and protects the pole.
I also have a pole concreted in the middle of my lawn and I used to have problems with neighbours cats pooing on the lawn near it. To cure that I have a plastic snake (my kids used to play with) curled up near the pole now the cats go elsewhere to poo. Its a trick used by gardeners to keep cats away without any harm.

I have several poles and my cat has never scratched them. He likes to walk against them or sit next to them and wrap his tail around it, like it’s his pole. LOL.

My pole has been up for a month and my cat hasn’t even noticed it. I thought she would be more interested in it. Also make sure the cat has something it can claw since they are finicky about cleanliness and usually scratch stuff to clean and stretch their claws.

Mine uses our carpeted floor to claw into. I was worried about this at first but the carpet shows no wear from her doing this.

I have multiple cats, and none of them have ever tried to scratch my pole. It might be the only surface the house they haven’t tried to scratch. As someone pointed out earlier, even if your cat tried to scratch the pole, it’s claws simply aren’t hard enough to do any damage.

My main problem with cats and pole is the cats getting under foot, attacking my hair, etc. when I’m on the pole. I have to lock them out of the room to use it. I didn’t have this problem when I had a senior cat, but now I have a bunch of hyper youngsters.

I have 2 clawed kitties and neither of them have ever tried to scratch the pole. The most they seek interested in it is watching the two lock screws go in circles when it’s in spin mode. They may or may not have reached a paw out to try and catch them, but no scratching 🙂
