So I have picked up yoga as a regular practice these days as a part of my spiritual exploration. There are so many different styles to try. I was wondering if any of you flexy ladies have practiced and what styles you recommend. Ashtanga yoga is beautiful. I have no words for this demo I found. http://youtu.be/PAjTqLQU01g Had to share.

I have been practicing yoga for over like 3-4 years and I have friend a few different types there are so many. If you go to Yoga Journal.com they have some info. I am not very fond of ashtanga but do like Hatha yoga. As for hot yoga I don’t feel that it’s for me. I have a friend who loves it but I just don’t feel inner peace while doing it not so much the temperature but the pace.

I do vinyasa yoga a few times a week. I like it because it has certain elements of ashtanga (flowing into postures, energetic versus passive movement) but the sequences are not as rigid and the classes are less formally structured.

I have tried hot yoga before and I do not like it. I sweat a lot even when taking regular vinyasa classes, so I certainly don't need the help! And I often feel unsafe in certain postures when the mat gets slippery. I've found yoga to be really helpful as cross training for pole dance, and it helps me to focus on feeling good and doing good for my body, instead of obsessing about how I look or dance.

Sweet D, have you found any place that offers yoga economically?  That is part of my biggest issue.  That and it seems like many of the studios do not offer evening classes or if they do they are at 5 or 6 pm.

chemgoddess, there is a website called YogaGlo that has online classes and instruction. It's similar to SV in that regard. I have not tried it, but I see ads for it occasionally. It seems made for the same type of busy person who can't or prefers not to attend classes.

I do recommend taking a few classes in person to start (maybe on a weekend, if there are no studios that fit around your work schedule) but yoga can easily be practiced at home once you have the basics down.

Hello girls! I've been taking poweryoga classes for about two years, and actually educated myself for instructing classes, but havn't completed it yet. Anyway, since I have had a shortage of time and wanted to add in some yoga and maby try some other styles, especially ashtanga, since poweryoga is derived from it and hatha yoga. But taking more classes on top of what I already do is a no no at the time, economically and timely. So I searched youtube, and found lots and lots of awsome videos 🙂 there are yoga videos for anything from better sleep to help during your cycle, and I just love all those hippieish, all natural approach to solving things 🙂

This video and routine I tried this morning, and it definitely made my morning 🙂 it's for waking up and feeling more flexible when you get up, andd is a great, healthy start of the day 🙂

But then again, I have been introduced to yoga already, and know how to breathe and make the asanas, so maby it's a good idea to take some classes first an then make up your own schedual.

I've also tried bikramyoga and totally loved it at first, but then I found out that every class has the same structure, and that would get me bored after a while. That's what I like about poweryoga, you kind of take what you like and what fits for you 🙂

An other yoga form that I think is awsome, een so to greater lenght than poweryoga for polers, is yin yoga. Yin yoga focuses more on stretching the muscles, and is more of a stretch. It is awsome to do a yin yoga class if your too tired and have too much tension to take another class. I also found yin yoga classes at youtube 🙂

To me the "calmer" forms of yoga are not that attractive – I just get bored instead of getting relaxed and feel inner peace.. That's why I also love ashtanga yoga. Love the flow of it and it also helps me to become more flexible in a beautiful way. I sporadically take courses, if time and money allows it 🙂

Thank you all for your suggestions! I really appreciate the direction and insight. And no Chem, I haven’t checked into any studios yet. I feel like I’m starting my life over again if that makes any sense. Taking it one day at a time and enjoying the ride. One thing I do know is that my body craves some sort of movement on a daily basis. If I don’t move, my spirit is just not happy. Even if it’s just dancing while I do housework. Lol. The creative juices are flowing like they were when I started art school so I’m trying to take advantage of it. Journaling, writing lyrics, singing, I’m just a ball of joy right now. 🙂 Yoga seems to be another good way to stay in action, but also feel that quiet calm. Thanks again ladies!

I started yoga 2 weeks ago, tonight will be my 3rd session. I didn’t start it for inner peace stuff, I want the core and balance that yoga gets you oh and hope it will improve my gracilis flexibility 🙂 I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it but I actually really do! I feel SO relaxed afterwards and my joints feel like I have oiled them up. Plus you can see your flexibility improve throughout the poses. Cool or what? I don’t know what kind of yoga it is but at the moment it’s my fav kind 🙂

I like ashtanga, and have tried some aerial yoga that was pretty great, too. I love the focus required to truly be working in it and feeling the different areas of my body "wake up". Yoga definitely is a workout for me in ways that running and pole are not. Very helpful.

i used to get impatient in general or cranky in traffic… even road ragey.  yoga not only has improved my strength and flexibility, it also strengthened my mind.  Holding and balancing in poses for several seconds with a calm face and controlled breathing prepares a person to keep control in stressful life situations.
