I realize this isn’t specifically pole-related, but I think that this is the best place I could possibly ask for advice!
I have been very interested in yoga for a long time, and there ARE places for me to go to do classes, but they are expensive, and I’m a sad, poor student right now 😉 Obviously, yoga provides a great benefit, especially to us polers!
However, if I wanted to get into it now, it would be a self-taught, home-based sort of thing. Is it possible to do yoga from home, without a teacher? How do I know if I’m doing the poses correctly (considering some of them can be a little dangerous if not correctly aligned)? I have a mirror, but it’s not very wide, so I’ll only be able to see part of myself in it.
Of course, once I learn the moves correctly, it would be easier to remember how I’m supposed to get into them. It’s the starting-out that I’m concerned with.

Eventually I’ll take proper yoga in a studio with other humans (a friend of mine absolutely LOVES it), but for now, money is a major issue.

I found Gaiamtv recently. Love it. It is $10 a month. Absolutely worth it, love the dept of detail with the videos as well. I have had a hard time finding my own yoga flow. Every now and then i can get a nice flowy session without guidance but for the most part I still need to hear all the little reminders etc that they offer and the way they piece the poses together with breath is something I’m unable to do most days. The variety on Gaiam blows my mind from yoga to tai chi, Pilates and then mind soul truth videos as well. They offer a free trial too !! I was sold my first day!! I have used it almost everyday for the last 2 months even if it’s just for a 9 minute quickie 😉 hope this helps.

If you can just take a couple classes to get a solid base that would be helpful. Most classes work off of sun salutations and just have an (insert pose here) moment and run back through the sun salutation and (insert different pose here). So if you can go to a class and get tips to get down your basic sun salutation that would help. A lot of universities have discounted or free yoga classes on campus too, so maybe see if your university offers that.

I used to use yogatoday.com because they used so many internal cues, but sadly it’s no longer what it used to be 🙁 maybe someone here will have a suggestion for online classes, and you could video yourself to see if it looks right…but at the same time there is detail that may not come across in video. Yoga is so subtle, really finding videos or material with good internal cues and visualizations of movement is going to be your best bet. Not sure what you’re in school for, but I remember you are a writer…but if you happen to be in school for medical anything or are well versed in anatomy, Rat Long’s mat companion books are phenomenal. Check it out on amazon and read the reviews to see if it may be right for you. If you have a kindle you can read a sample, and some of the reviewers are beginners so it works for some people.

If you haven’t tried it, my best advice is to try Pilates as an intro to yoga. It increases body awareness, strength, flexibility, and the basic Pilates sequence is pretty safe 🙂 it is also focused on coordinating breath with movement, so that transfers to yoga as well

Lulu Lemon has free yoga classes! Athleta may too.

Lulu’s classes are great. A different studio hosts each month so you get exposed to a lot of different teachers and styles. Its not great for consistency but its great for variety!

“Every week, lululemon stores and showrooms push their products aside, unroll yoga mats and turn their spaces into instant yoga studios. Classes are complimentary and lead by instructors from local studios in your community. Find your local store info here: http://www.lululemon.com/stores/

Bonus for the lulu lemon thing, it means you can try out mats before you buy them 🙂 so then you know which one you like 🙂

Ok, just to keep blowing up this thread…

the free classes are also a nice place to meet people and make friends. It took me a while, because I was really quiet at first, but one girl started talking to me… now a bunch of us get tea and coffee afterwards. We could not be more different… and the age range is really big, but I know you were struggling with friendships and I felt like the yoga classes were really beneficially for me physically, mentally and also socially.
