Before I started pole fitness I never really thought much about this… But since I’ve been diving more and more into pole my pole persona and style have changed (numerous times)

When I initially decided to take a pole class, I was hoping to be strutting around in heels and shaking my hips sexily.

Then I decided I wasn’t actually interested in any of that. I was hungry for the strength and control it takes to get your feet off the ground. I craved the flexibility needed to create beautiful shapes in the air. I yearned for the grace needed to transition from one move to the next.

I started to enjoy watching videos of people who treated the pole more like gymnasts treat the rings or balance beam. Barefoot. Slow controlled movements. Subdued outfits without flashy colors or sparkle.

Then as I realized that is HARD and it’s going to be a while before I can safely do many of those moves… I decided I needed to have a little fun on the pole (while also doing my pole crunches, pull ups, core and flexibility exercises)… So I started to look back at the spins, body waves and hip circles… And I realized I of still enjoy that. I even ordered a pair of pole heels.

So I guess I fall somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. My style probably isn’t very flashy or overly “sexy”. I probably won’t be breaking out the sparkly pink undies any time soon… I still want to have a more gymnastic like quality to my moves (despite my current lack of strength and flexibility), but I’m willing to shake it a little bit too. 🙂

I was just wondering what other peoples pole styles are, and have they changed over time?! Tell me (us) the story and evolution of your pole persona!

I think it’s pretty common to switch between, or love all aspects of pole.

I gravitate towards the artistic and sexy side, tricks are fun to work on if I’m in the right mood. I guess I would say, how I dance, really depends on my mood. I would love to be perceived as very well rounded pole dancer that can express everything from fun to sensual. I personally don’t want to be known for only one genre of pole.

    Great thread.

I have a lot of different styles-the more I experimented with pole as an art form, the more I realized it is very similar to acting. You can embody various characters-it’s interesting and fun to see which one comes out depending on music, or mood.

One of my pole personas, I decided just yesterday, is “Genesis”. She’s very deep and emotive, her dances are contemplative, and embody a raw sensuality-there is no makeup, glitter, or heels…Genesis is always barefoot.

Then there is Innanna, who is basically a spirit that possesses me and conveys messages from the ether-world. Inanna always wears a specific mask, to denote her presence. To an outsider, her face (mask) may frighten some, but she carries positive intention. She is very sensual, whether in heels or barefoot, and often communicates with the numbers “3”.

Then there is…hmm I haven’t figured out the other two, which are always in heels. They are very feminine, sensual, and openly sexual. One is more hardcore, the other is soft and sensual.

    *Names are subject to change.

Btw, I’ve actually visited a strip club and introduced myself to a stripper as GENESIS. So these are real people.

@GataAgressiva – I love that you have defined pole personalities! Like a lot of people, I think my style is a little different every day. That’s an interesting idea, though. I might have to try developing a few of my own characters.

I don’t think I have one. My ability to do pole tricks is very minimal, my ability to dance and do floor work is okay. To do a routine I look a little clumsy and out of place and tend to not be able to do everything. I definitely don’t fall in the sexy category and I most definitely don’t fit in the fitness/gymnastic category. Though I’d like to think eventually I’ll fit into both, but right now I there’s no category for me!

I love the dancey/balletic contemporary side of pole but still bust out my heels once in a while! 😉

My style is definitely gymnastic/athletic/trickster. I can pull off some awesome gymnastics-like tricks and strength moves, but I look absolutely ridiculous when I try to make anything flowing or sexy. I don’t know if I’ll ever be a heels girl, but I would definitely like to work on incorporating more flow and smoother transitions between my tricks!

Great thread! I love thinking about the various styles of pole. I used to really be into the rock n roll/sexy side of pole. I always wore high heels and loved the dancey side of pole. (Well I trained at Bobbi’s so of course I danced like that :P) But now I’m more into the contemporary/interpretive/emotive side of pole, bare-feet and slower, sadder songs. One constant has been the artistic dance value…. I love the way pole looks and feels, the details and transitions and floor work. Big power moves do wow me and I love being able to do cool tricks, but I enjoy watching the dancer move more than the athlete.
