Well my day didn't go the way I had expected:  This morning my granddaughter (age 5) was playing just like normal – nothing unusual.  Around 10:15, she said she didn't feel good.  Around 10:20 she again said she didn't feel good and she started whining.  I took her temp and it was 98.8.  I told her to just sit for a little bit and I put on a DVD.  At 10:30 she started having a MASSIVE seizure.  It lasted for over 2 minutes.  During the seizure, she bit her tongue and blood was everywhere.  She started vomiting and since she was laying on her back, she started to aspirate.  After the seizure, she was totally unresponsive.  I called 911.  It took the paramedics about 10 minutes to get to my house.  They took her temp and it was 102.6.  The paramedics were at my house for only 3 – 4 minutes when they decided she needed to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.  The ambulance ride took about 18 minutes.  At the hospital they took her temp and it was 104.6.  So within about 30 – 40 minutes, her temp went from totally normal to 104.6.  They aren't sure, but they think the seizure happened because her temp rose so fast – her body just couldn't handle it.  She didn't start to 'come around' until 45 minutes after the seizure ended.  The hospital is keeping her overnight for observation.  Hubby is with her right now.  I came home to get a couple of things and to change my clothing – she barfed on me as we were getting into the ambulance.  I will stay the night with her.  She is doing well now, except that she is still having a lot of jerking or 'ticks' with her body.  They told me that that is not unusual with seizures.  Tonight, she wanted to eat and drink at dinner so that's a good sign.  Hopefully we can bring her back home tomorrow.  She scared the CRAP out of me!  We already have an appointment scheduled on Tuesday morning with a pediatric neurologist.  The doctors are hoping that the seizure was just from the fever, but since it was so bad and it came on so quickly, they want to make sure there is nothing else wrong.  I'm not sure I can wait for the next couple of days for the appointment, but I really don't have any other choice!  Well, I better get back to the hospital.  I bought her a new little stuffed animal so she will have a 'friend' to help her with her hospital stay.   Let's hope Tuesday comes quickly!

That’s absolutely awful. Fingers crossed it’s nothing too serious and she bounces right back. I can’t even imagine how scary that must have been. Little kids can be really tough, though. Keeping your family in my thoughts.

Stevesgirl, I am very sorry to hear this news. I will be keeping her and you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. She will enjoy having her 'friend' that you picked up with her for the hospital stay. I hope that she is well and recovers quickly for such an aggressive seizure.

Let us know how things go.

I send my best wishes to you. I know what it is like having to wait weeks for a neuro appointment. I feel like I spent most of my life in the different specialist offices. I never had a grand mal seizure, but I can say seizures in general are not fun to experience and the after-seizre confusion can be quite a pain.

It really does sound like it was a febrile seizure. It is odd that her temperature rose so quickly. I wonder what caused that?

Anyways, I hope she gets better soon so you guys can get some rest too! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

How frightening! Seizures are so difficult for a parent/grandparent to experience!

I'm guessing (and praying for her) that it is just the fever. It's not a high fever that causes seizures but how quickly the temperature goes up so likely that's the cause but you have to follow through with neurology in these cases to make certain to not miss anything.

    Keep us posted.

We are back home now.  Thanks for all the well wishes.  The doctors told me that she is pretty old to be having the febrile seizures.  They said that since she had it at this age, there is a good chance she will have seizures later in life.  They did say they want the pediatric neurologist to be the final judge on that though.  I am hoping for the best, but I'm trying to prepare for the worst.  Usually, for us, it is always the 'worst'.  Seriously, my friends tell me that my sold purpose for being on this earth is to make them feel better about their lives!

I am terrified of letting her go to sleep tonight.  I want to sleep in her room tonight but I know I can't sleep in there forever.  I might be overreacting, but when my son was 12 years old, one of his best friends died from a seizure so I'm quite paranoid about seizures.

At least we are going to be able to get into see the specialist soon.  We are quite lucky on that part.

Thanks again to everyone for the thoughts and prayers.  I really appreciate it.

So scary, I know.  My fifth child did this to me.  Almost the same scenario.  I hope your nerves will be calmed soon.  Hang in there!

We saw the neurologist today.  He believes that my granddaughter probably has some sort of seizure disorder.  They are going to do an EEG and an MRI to see if they can tell anything from that.  The EEG that they are doing will take an entire week.  She is hooked up to all the little electrodes and those are attached to a portable recorder.  Her entire head will be bandaged up.  Unfortunately, she starts school (kindergarten) on Monday.  I don't want her to miss a whole week of school but I also don't want her going to school like that – kids can be so cruel.  In order to do the MRI, they will have to put her under sedation.  They want to wait a little while before they do that.  I guess they want her brain to have some recovery time after the seizure before they sedate her.  I am waiting to hear when they are going to schedule these procedures.  I think they are going to do the EEG as soon as possible.
