Hi ladies. I am a bit frustrated with this move. I even paid a year membership here and loved every minute of it but…..I’m stuck now. Can’t get to the butterfly from apprentice. I get stuck in the apprentice position and can’t shift my body around for some reason. Any tips?

A video here would be really helpful in giving you advice. There are a couple things that can help. When you hook the top ankle on the pole, try to pull up towards the pole with that hooked ankle at the top hand. The bottom arm presses downwards.

The key is to do this all simultaneously so that your hips lift up above your head. I’d say the pushing down with the bottom arm is most important, but with the pull of the top ankle and top hand, there will be no success. You can also add the other leg to the pole halfway through, in a fireman position, to help pull your lower body all the way up. Once you figure it out you can try it without that aid. I hope that was helpful! Good luck! 🙂

*But without* the pull of the top ankle and top hand.* (sorry, bad mobile typing…)

Thank u so much. I’m not brave enough to post videos online 🙁 I’m sure it would be useful to be able to see what I’m doing wrong. I do end up with my hips over my head but can’t get my bottom hand in the right position in order for my body to face the pole more.

Have you tried the lesson for the split grip invert?

I am not taking the lessons right now. Want to take a break to nail this and be more consistent with my aerial inverts before I take lessons again because I feel like I waste a lot of time not being strong enough to try other moves…

Oh I thought you said you were taking them…I have this combo in the lessons, so that is why I was asking. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif If your having trouble inverting then you might need to build up a bit more strength to do App to Bfly aka (split grip invert)

No problem. I took the lessons for a year and will definitely take them again soon : ). My invert from the floor is strong and I can invert from a climb but it does not look pretty yet so I need more practice for sure. Thanks!

That is not an easy move because for a moment most of your weight is on that bottom arm. Maybe you are not ready for it. I didn't even attempt that move until I was at my peak performance. You will need to give yourself some time. Keep practicing climbs and aerial inverts and it will come to you eventually. In the video I posted not a long time ago, theres something similar- side V into butterfly. I guess it could help as a visual aid.

The lower you slide your bottom hand, the less you need to push up and away with it and the more it becomes a swivel to get your chest and shoulders facing the poole. If youre really stumped, I’d recommend going from a Gemini to butterfly to make sure you have the muscle memory of moving your torso from beside the pole to face the pole… Then when you’re confident in that, try it from apprentice again but slide your bottom hand low and then turn in toeards the pole. The more confident you get and the stronger the bottom arm and hand, the less you slide until you are able to push through the bottom arm with it high.

Thanks amy. I never thought of trying from a gemini. That might be just what I need, will try it as soon as I get home tonight.

Yay!! I was able to do it from the gemini! Not easy but I did it. I will have to practice it until it becomes easier and then attempt from apprentice. The girls at my studio had no problem learning it from apprentice but it feels weird to me. Weird..

glad i could be of help! 🙂

different entires work for different people, that's not unusual at all! i teach butterfly from a ton of different starting positions because sometimes some make sense to you right away and others don't… 🙂
