Hi pole-twista! Bellydance is something I study and enjoy greatly. From what I’ve heard/seen Jillina is a good instructor, but be sure that is the style you are looking to learn before spending any money on an instructor’s lessons. There are many flavors of bellydance as it is a continental rather than regional dance. I believe Jillina dances in a choreographed Egyptian style? This wouldn’t be a style necessarily focusing on using the zill (finger cymbals) too much; you’ll find them more heavily used in carabet and tribal.
An important question to ask yourself if "What kind of music do I want to to dance to?" as well as what kind of bellydance style of movement do you appreciate the most? Is it the languid fluidity of carabet, the eloquently coordinated movements of Egyptian style? Maybe the flirtacious, yet folkloric Turkish or fast and technique-heavy Lebanese. Or perhaps (like me) you might like the freedom of one the numerous Tribal and fusion styles out there. A good solid practice DVD can be had by Aziza’s Ultimate Bellydance Practice Companion. Sadie’s DVD’s are excellent all around. Ansuya is terrific for zill work and carabet layering.
As far as a dance studio to preview different styles of the dance I heartily recommend http://www.worlddancenewyork.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; because of their wide representation of styles, excellent instruction and affordable pricing. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of alluring dvd’s on that site so the beginner DVD to look for there is Jenna’s "Bellydance Basics and Beyond".
There’s a lot out there overall, so look around for free info and DVD previews on YouTube before buying. Personally, my next bellydance dvd purchase is going to be "Flawless Floorwork with Ruby" from Cheeky Girls Productions. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_study.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_geek.gif

wow! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif thanks for all the help! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif i really like a wide range of music, but i do really want to be able to use the finger symbals… i like the heavy drum beats, but also the more airy light music as well. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif
i just love music and dance all around! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/bom.gif
my friend was trying to teach me last week some of the moves but i find it sooo hard to isolate my muscles. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif
i am so use to working out in a way that uses as many muscles at once as possible, i can’t seem to get the concept of squeezing muscles sepratly in my belly to do the "ripple" as i call it where she makes like waves on her belly using her muscles.. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_batman.gif
when i try to do it i just contract my whole abdominals.. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif i just think it is such a beautiful & erotic style of dance that really celebreates being a woman. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif
i have 1 dvd, but it’s not very thorogh, and the moves seem a little commerical rather than authentic. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
have a hip scarf, but am now looking for veils, finger symbals, dvds, classes, ect. (since there are no pole classes https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif )
would love to download some music from rhasody, but don’t know any artists.. maybe type in bellydance music, or egyptian music? hmm.. well i love the idea of getting into this more so have more fun options on my off pole days. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif plus it’s something i think i could get my mother to try. she is very supportive of my pole dancing (even though she is terrified i’m going to fall when she sees pics of my in gemini ect lol). maybe they could make bellydancing for the wii! well thank you for all your advice! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif -
Figuring out style will help to focus, but a lot of dvd’s out there for beginners have a lot of the same basics. I tend to perform to a fusion style, but I have been classically trained in several styles. As far as zills go…. A few good dvd’s out there are Belly dancing with Zills, Killer Zills:Belly dance finger cymbals, and Drills!Drills! Drills! a complete workout with finger cymbals.
