  • calories burned in poling?

Posted by Dancing Paws on March 9, 2012 at 9:15 am

Hey ladies! Does anyone know how many calories per hour can be burned in poling? Right now I am DESPERATELY trying to lost weight by counting calories and how much I am burning in exercise (livestrong.com to the rescue!) The site doesn't have pole dancing as an option. The closest is just "dancing." I would like to be a little more accurate if possible.

That’s a good question..depending on how much I do, I normally put it n as gymnastics and dancing..

It's not easy to calculate this. It varies depending on your weight, your heart rate, your age and your ability to sustain the activity continuously for the given time.

Depending on the structure of the class it can be compared to traditional dance classes or more often to low or even high impact aerobics. There are many variables but on an average I wouldn't count on more than 200 calories an hour.

I calculated mine based on my calorie counter app.  I am 118 lbs and do 90 minute advanced level classes.  I broke it down int he app as 15 minutes of stretching/yoga, 15 minutes of light calethsenics, 30 minutes of heavy calethsenics, and 30 minutes of dance (fast-paced).  When I added up the calories burned from those activities it came up to 213 calories.  Of course, this is a very personal estimate as not everyone's classes are the same but you can use your app the same way! 🙂

The best way would be to get a heartrate monitor that also tracks calories.  Wish I could make suggestions, I've been researching them myself.  Calories burned over time has so many variables.  Then there's the thousands of exercises you can do on the pole and count it as pole dancing.  I've seen studios advertise a 400 calorie burn per class, but they're trying to sell.

I've been tracking my food calories, but understand it's just an estimate.  I never take exercise calorie calculations seriously.  Calorie counting can be amazing or a nightmare, but that's an off topic discussion I'll save for private messaging if your interested.

I have to be doing something wrong. I might not be active enough? Even though my whole stretching, hoop and/or pole or bellydance, and my PT strength training takes me at least 2 hours every night to complete and gets me tired and my herat rate up. Bleh.

I have a very nice polar heart monitor that tells me exactly how many calories etc I burn. I used to use it all the time when cycling long distances. Havent cycled in over a year due to my Lyme disease, but I will see if the batteries are still active and try to give you an idea on at least what I burn per hour while poling.

I wore my bodybugg to my level 2 class (1 hr clas) and it showed about 250 calories burned per hour. At times it showed up to 4 calories per minute, which is about what I’d burn alternating walking & running. Straight out sprinting was 6 calories per min, so poling is a great calorie burner!

I was gonna say get a body bugg too! It is so cool! You can see on a graph the time line of  what you were doing and how it translates to calories burned. I love to look at it and try to remember what I was doing when  as I see the graph change!

Practicing super advanced moves burns more calories too. I think of it more as a circuit training type workout. Doing cardio (dance) and strength together.

I wish I could get a bodybugg, but I can't justify the expense when I can just check my heart rate manually.

It is comparable if not more than crossfit in one hour.

Spinning burns more calories though than static.

The thing is the calculations have to be in concordance to your body …and so, also one has to keep moving for the whole hour to be accurate because I see people saying I poled for 2hrs and they in fact only did 30 min. with standing around for the 1 1/2 hr. I understand that everyone can have down days but these are usually the same people.

So I tried using my calorie counting watch just now. Did A LOT of spins, transitions, and floor work. Got my heartrate between 75% and 82% most of the time. I did double check that my watch is counting my heart rate accurately by measuring it myself and it is on target. So….my watch said I burned 777 calories in the last hour. I know that is an average, but that seems so HIGH!
