Fitocracy runs on a point system and social site style. They have groups that have different exercise styles. A couple of poling groups. Makes a nice tracking place for your workouts.

I covered both Fitocracy and LiveStrong in a magazine article I wrote (which is how I got started on Fitocracy). LiveStrong is good for people who are trying t lose weight, as you can log your food and water, and the exercise is cardio-centric. Fitocracy is good for real fitness enthusiasts and gym rats. You don't log your food, but you log how many sets of what exercise you did at what weight. But you can log pole dancing as a cardio exercise; it is one of the exercise options you can select. You just put how long you did it and estimate your intensity level. So overall, Fitocracy is geared more specifically towards working out, whereas LiveStrong is more an overall diet and (general) exercise aid.

Nothing wrong with using both, if you decide to branch out. 🙂 There's some overlap, but you can use them for different things.

My pole school was asked to take part in a fitness study into the health benefits of pole dance in terms of heart rate and cals burned per min for the university of Stirling ( Scotland UK in 2011) this was done over several days with 30 students of different skill levels. Each class was 90 mins and included warm up, pole moves (of that skill beginner, intermediate advanced and super advanced) and cardio filler/traditions and floor work and a cool down. Each student wore a heart monitor throughout. The results were interesting despite skill level and having rests inbetween moves and waiting your turn to go on the pole ( some students shared a pole although no more than 2 to a pole) they still burned a large amount of calories. Although super advanced folk did burn slightly more cals than beginners it surprisingly wasn’t much more. And despite some folk having a few mins rest whilst waiting to have a go on the pole the cals burned did not decrease as was previously thought would happen. It infact backs up the theory that the best way to excerise is in short bursts of energy followed by a small rest period then a burst of energy again and so on rather than continual exercise. The study also tested the heart monitors on students in a body combat class, body pump and an areobics class. It was found that on average a 90 min pole class burned approx 600 cals and infact burned more over all or was on par with some of the other fitness classes. Thus proving that pole should be recognised as a sport in its own right. Hope this helps ladies xc

Wow! That is awesome! It kinda makes sense though. My heart rate goes up just doing floor work and transitions (higher than when I am hooping.) if I add spins or tricks it gets up higher. Yay for pole!!!

I’m sure it varies somewhat depending on class structure, length of time and what you do in class, definatly think more research should be done into pole and it’s effects ( good and bad) on the body but yes I was pleasantly surprised with our results I was only expecting maybe a 200/300 cal burn

This is a really excellent discussion and should help a lot of polers. I still want the fitbit monitor but I’m glad to hear poling burns a lot of calories.

I couldn't tell…is the fitbit a one time payment? or do you have to pay a monthly fee like the bodybugg?

I don’t remember a fee being associated with the program but computer is a must. You get a program with the system.

Interesting! I used the calculator sensualscimiter posted and it said I burn 290.59 cals/hour. So I’m assuming those 1000 cal meals I inhale after pole are NOT good. Lol!
