Yes flexibility can be gained as an adult.

That’s the good news, the bad news is you are going to have stretch each and every day! You need to warm up properly – atleast 12 minutes. Then stretch for about 20 minutes a day – 2-3 times is best and don’t over stretch (this causes you to be less flexible.)

    Tips
Breathe, breathe through your stretches and breathe as you take them deeper
You should experience discomfort but not pain
Stretch all the leg muscles – not just hip flexors or hamstrings but glutes, quads, knees, ankles, feet, back etc.
Take your time going into deep stretches and hold them for about a minute.
    Take it slow, don’t bounce
Drink lots of water before, during and after stretching sessions
RELAX – if you’re stressed out, your muscles will be really tense so relax
    Be warmed up!!!
Spend the time to make sure you are doing your stretches properly and using good posture.
    Don’t worry about "Progress"

Even if you have a hard time getting to the splits increasing your flexibility will not only make moves look nicer but it will decrease your chance of injury. So even if you never quite get to splits atleast you’ll be improving your body and it’s ability to stay safe.

I’ve known people to get splits as an adult who never could as a child.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll need to find the time but… you’re right moves do look better when there is more flexability. When I was young I walked on my tip toes d/t tight heel cords. I just never pushed further. thanks again!!

Just to add it really is possible I was 30cm off the ground but now I’ve got it. I never did the splits as a child either. It took 6 months but I wasn’t so great at doing it every day and I only stretched once or twice a week. Good luck.

I have started a nightly light stretch. I start with the obvious light stretches and then i put one leg up across on the top of some chairs which makes my leg straight across and hold it and lean into it and straighten too. I’ve gotta start doing the back one the back way with the other for standing.

I’m doing this at work when no one is watching. Its time convenient there , I’ll have to reserve the actual stretching anything that looks like the splits for at home.

Any other creative ways for me to start trying for the splits?

Here are some stretches you could work on. Always warm up for the safest and most effective stretch. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
