I've been working on this one and my instructor taught me an interesting way to work up to it. She has me try it from the floor. So I put my right hand on the pole, elbow up. My left hand is on the floor nearby. I swing my legs back and up, into a Brass Monkey from the floor. Then you can work your way up.

She also has me condition my lower abs to do this trick. So I hold like I'm going to do a flag, then basically contract my lower abs and lift my ass awkwardly in the air. I then launch my legs forward for momentum and then up into the Brass Monkey. I'll try to make a video soon because that may not make any sense at all. lol

I’ve never heard of this invert-very excited to see this done-sounds super interesting 🙂

Beginning stages for me also now that I can do a decent flag…NEVER thought I would.  So need to strengthen flag hold and work on the abs and lifting butt up!  Maybe a year 🙂

I find my chest and shoulders do a fair amount of the work in a flag invert too, not just abs. Here's a video where it's shown in slow motion. You'll see how I keep my legs in a L position with the hips stacked one on top of each other, Then open into V legs, and last tuck the lower leg lifting up. https://www.studioveena.com/videos/view/500d6129-fd58-49bf-8a6e-73600ac37250

I never thought about using my chest to push. My instructor learned the butt up (as I like to call it, lol) technique from David Owens. Because theoretically the most difficult part of flag inverting is getting your butt up. I have lots of butt to get up but perhaps that chest push would help. I'll try it out. Thanks.

I was told you should learn this move aerially and never kick up. When I learned it, I was taught to go from a climb to leaning forward around the pole (as if you're about to go into twisted ballerina. Getting your head as far below your butt as possible is key. Then you armpit grip and lift into brass monkey. It sounds really simple, but took a lot of practice for me to even get my legs off the pole. I gave up on this move and am working on conditioning, it's a lot harder than people making it look!

I have learned 2 different ways of getting into this move.  One is the butt up which kind of requires you to be able to lift into a handstand.  In this one your body is pretty much always facing the ground until you invert.  The secdon way is actually from a flag where your body is facing away from the pole to start and then you are changing positions.  This mount requires a decent straddle split and some back flexibilty.  Basically you go into flag, then straddle split your legs and then beckbend/fang them while simultaneouly changing into a face down position to get your leg to the pole.  If you have a great straddle split you can pretty much reach the pole with your top leg and then use that to guide you.

Good Zoeyxxxx, yes Megan, getting the butt up is the hardest part! You have to make sure your gripping really low between the legs with the hands when you start so your head is as far down as it can be.
