Does anybody know of any good (legitimate – other than wiki) articles that have been written about the history of pole dancing and/or the different forms (athletic, artistic, sensual) and influences (chinese pole, club dancing)? are there any yet?

Great Thread! I was just going to start researching this myself so when I have "Demo" classes I can talk about it. Thanks!

After hearing about this book on this site, I got in touch with the author. I just published an interview with her and an excerpt of the book on my blog; http://www.polefitfanatics.com/2011/02/pole-dancing-empowerment-and-embodiment/

She was sooo lovely. I recommend the book…https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Oh, and just as an addition to that post, she would really like the book to be released in paperback. It is good to hear that is is cheaper at b and n than at amazon. It is v expensive which she says is disturbingly typical of academic books. So, if you can't find it, or don't want to pay the price, get in touch with the publisher, palgrave mcmillan, and ask them to hurry up and publish it in paperback! I have..

When I first told my mom I was learning to pole dance he automatically assumed chinese pole. Before it was a circus act, martial artist used poles to build nimbleness and strength. I can't give a good source for that info though, just hear say and things they show in chinese historical movies.

Here's a little article on my site: http://www.learn-pole-dancing.com/history-of-pole-dancing.html It goes ove the general history and how it came to the U.S and how it started as a fitness venue.

Claire's book, The Pole Story http://poleskivvies.com/pole-dancing-clothing/2011/07/claire-sterretts-pole-story-book/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Poleskivvies+%28PoleSkivvies%29

is said to be one of those books that explains a lot about pole dancing…I have not read it yet and if anyone has, I'm interested in what you think about it!

I can’t recall where I read this to verify I remember being informed years ago that pole dancing girls originated under the turn of the century style circus big top tents. The poles used to hold the tents would be climbed by the the acrobatic females inbetween the bigger acts.
