I would not do jacknife out of extended butterfly because you have to shift your weight and that makes it harder. I think that the best way to get jacknife is just to keep trying to do a basic handsping/cartwheel mount until you get it. It’s definitely a trick that you have to try over and over and over again until you get it. There is nothing more to it other than practice in bringing your body into the correct place to have balance in the pose. Keep at it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif

well i am glad i asked! i have been trying for over a year (granted not consistently) so am amazingly frustrated at this point trying to get it. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif i even bought a 45mm when already have 2 poles, but thought it might make it easier. it doesn’t. least not for me. when i try to do the one ( always confuse HS and CW) where you tip back i hit my knees on the pole, and when trying to do one where tip foward i don’t let my head drop enough to get hips over head.. oh the frustration!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif well thanks for the advice! will keep trying. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

do you take classes? Ask an instructor to spot you through it (or hold your hips and bring you to the right position). If not, I’d suggest taking one just for that. I had a huge issue is the cartwheel mount because I was afraid to go all the way upside down as I brought my legs up. Eventually, after being held in the right place, it became less scary and I was able to do it (after about a thousand tries).

yo- check it
http://ver3.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4035not from a butterfly, technically
but from an invert of some kind.i’d like to get the jacknife too & i feel like this way would be more comfortable for me. I’m scared of cartwheel mounts right now https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif
also- if you click the "search" button at the top right and put in jacknife or jackknife, you’ll see more vids.

https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_arrow.gif No, no classes around here. closest is 30mins 1 way and the teacher knows a lot less moves than I do so idk about getting help there.
https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_arrow.gif thanks for the linmk and the advice!

Girl I will be honest…getting the hands on from an instructor once in a while does help immensely. I have been known to drive over an hour to get to studio here (one way). Some moves are really easier to get once an instructor can watch you and help you physically get into the move. I think it helps also to have some support, then you can go home and try again. I apologize, I don’t have much advice on the Jacknife as I haven’t tried it out yet. Good luck with it though, any new move is a good one https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif I can’t wait to see when you do get it, I will do the happy dance with ya!

It’s always much easier to learn to descend down into a move than it is to kick or invert up into it. Have you tried working from a basic invert, splitting your grip, finding your balance point, and taking your legs off the pole?
From an invert, I do a small caterpillar to get a bit of height with my butt and get my top hand firmly placed up by my belly with a bit of a bend in my elbow so my bicep is engaged. From there, I stick my butt out and bring my ankles to the pole with my legs straight piked out in front of me. I can then find my balance point and take my ankles off the pole. Once you’re used to that, you can start playing with moving your legs, bringing one over to lay on top of the other for jackknife.
The thing that made this finally click for me actually was a serious dose of rosin on my hands. Once I wasn’t worried about my grip slipping at all, I could play with it until I got it. -
I also would start by learning it from an invert (unless you’ve already got that portion, of course). I agree with invert, split grip, lean away with ankles still on and then work with it for awhile. KEEP WORKING IT! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif I know you already know this but you’re learning and gaining something with every attempt. When I start to get fed up with a move https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_shaking.gif it helps me to repeat over and over to myself "every time you work it you’re building muscle and balance."

I’ve been trying this too!
I found this video which was pretty helpful, not quite an extended butterfly so I found it a bit easier:

Also found that from an inverted D it was ok to try…. I haven’t quite got the jackknife yet it yet but getting there https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Hey Lady,
I got my jack knife seconds after I got my splitgrip aysha. I did aysha, then straight edge, then jack knife. Can you do a straight edge?
