  • “lazy abs” when inverting

Hi! I've not been around the site long so I'm not sure whether anyones posted this before so sorry if it's a repeat!

I'm currently working on my aerial invert and shoulder mount and last night my instructor told me I have "lazy" abs and that until now I've been relying on the momentum from my legs to invert (I have pretty long legs and get momentum from swinging them into the move -not kicking don't worry!)

Does anybody have any tips I could use to stop relying on my legs so much and use my abs a more? I'm not sure whether I need to improve the strength of them or if the strength is there and I'm just not using it!

I just went to a Karol Helms workshop and worked on this last night! For shouldner mounts, work on deadlifting from the floor in a sit (about a 45 degree angle) and work the descent nice and controlled too.

for other inversions, do knee crunches keeping good form and your hips in front of the pole. I think Veena has lessons on these. I'm committing to really focusing on my inversion strength so I'll be doing these regularly.

    good luck!

Ewa Tran gave me a great tip! When doing knee ups lift one leg first so cheating and momentum are next to impossible! Look at Ewa Tran’s videos and you will see it! ( sorry can’t post a link because I am techtarded

Bring your knees to chest, count “one Mississippi” and THEN go into your invert.

🙂 I didn't see your question about shoulder mounts– sorry– it helps to work them from a sit on the floor. I cover the progression in my blog here: http://aerialamy.com/blog/2011/06/21/tuesday-tips-shoulder-mounts/

    hope that helps 🙂 xoxo

I didn't realise that you were aerialamy! I was looking at your blog the other day but I hadn't seen the shoulder mount video – thanks for your help 🙂
