  • meathook frustration

    tips? tutorials? anything? I thought I had done meathook before, but I guess I did what’s known as reverse meathook. I canNOT seem to get the right technique/balance to let go of the top arm for longer than a second for the meathook. shoot!

    It can be a frustrating one. Especially in the winter as it’s best to have good grip with the side of the body. Use or something if you’re not warm enough. Then it’s about finding the right position to make it possible to balance. I think it really helps to drop the upper body as much as I can and stretch out that free arm.

    Later this week, I can try to film a video of the way I do it in case this explanation doesn’t make sense… but here goes: I personally find it easier (and prettier) to get into on spinny pole rather than static. I do it as part of a combo where I start off in a tuck – either starting on your knees next to the pole and tucking up or from standing – then I start to allow my arms to extend, which allows my bum to come up until my body is parallel to the floor, I extend my upper leg, then I can let go of my top hand.
    I hope that makes sense. If not, let me know and like I said, I’ll try to film a little clip of it! It’s really key to make sure your butt end isn’t below the level of your head because if it is, gravity will pull you right down! That’s true whether you’re on spin or static.

    Maybe you should try different ways to get in? I know one version from Gemini-Jade and one from Scorpio… I prefer the Jade one 🙂

    Can someone point me to a pic/vid/tutorial on meathook. I’ve seen a couple videos with meathooks in them, but I think they were used more as a transition and I couldn’t pinpoint the actual move in the combos. The name sounds cool, but now I need to figure out what it is!

    Chanty–cute vid!! That is one that I have done, I call that the reverse meathook. I can’t get the other one. :/

    Sparrow maybe try getting into it from a regular invert? I found the balance point in meathook on a trapeze and have translated it to other apparatus. I have found that it requires your hips to stay close to your hands, and for a person to be folded at the hips.

    If you invert to a straddle, bring the same leg as the top hand over to the other leg without dropping your hips down. Fold hard at the waist, and try it out. Keeping your hips up is usually the easiest way to find a balance point, and also why lifting up into it is more difficult. If this doesn’t make sense to you, I can probably figure out some sort of visual :). Hope that helps!

    here’s a trapeze video illustrating my last post. Easily adapted to pole, just remember that you are turning into your lower hand on the pole. Can also use the upper hand to help pull your hips over.

    Lol…we don’t call it the meathook…we’ve been calling it “the rib crusher” cause you can’t breather while your in it. I’ve never tried it on the pole. I can barely do it on the trap.

    I think the posts in here seem to be talking about two different meathooks – I think of the one with one hand holding on and legs kinda diagonally piked downwards (like the trapeze vieo linked to here) as the meathook and the one where you grip under the arm and turn your legs kinda sideways, like Val does in the Studio 409 video, as the Natasha Wang meathook (‘cos I think I saw her do this first and the person who showed me had been taught it by her). I can’t give tips on the former ‘cos I don’t really do it but with the later, I tuck my arm right across my back to grab my side on the opposite side while I’m in a jade then bring my outstretched leg around to the side with my other leg – once that hip clears around the pole, you should have a really good grip, making it pretty simple to take the hand off (or maybe that’s just me, with my prehensile stomach jub;p)

    Yes, 2 different ones are being discussed. I am trying to do the one Corby linked. I can do it on a horizontal bar, but not the pole :/

    Sparrow, what is your issue with the meathook? Are you having trouble with finding the balance or your hips dropping out? I know another issue with the meathook is the feeling of pinching in the ribs becoming overwhelming. Do you have video?

    @lolaslaytor, thats a great video thanks! My issue is I cant stop my hips from falling out of it i.e. cant hold it in place. Reminds me when I was learning the chopper, or straddle my hips kept falling back down – is it something like that that will develop with more practice?

    Ah I think I’ve figured out the rolling out of the hips, the pole placement needs to be along thighs I think? I had it tucked under the boob (not intentionally though!)
