need advice about going upside down
Posted by Daniellarella on March 4, 2014 at 6:46 pmI just learned how to go upside down on my pole, I have only been able to do it for about 2 weeks. I have been teaching myself and I have a prety large bruse on the outside of my left ankle I am just wondering if this sounds normal for just learning this trick or am I doing something wrong?

Bruises come with the territory in pole. Especially when first learning new moves. However, it would be beneficial to see a video of your invert before making a determination on if you are doing something wrong or not. Do you have Veena’s lessons? Technique is everything. For instance, if you are kicking into your invert instead of using a controlled motion, you could be placing undue impact to your ankles and other areas of your body (like the ribs).

It’s normal to have some bruising when first learning a new move, but as Saphyre mentioned, kicking hard to invert and ending up smashing the heel into the pole it would be best to work on your strength and technique first. By building up to inverts and learning proper technique you can prevent injury! Also make sure you are working both sides of the body equally if pole is your only workout right now. The lessons here will provide you with effective training for inverts if you don’t have them already. 🙂

My friend broke a rib doing her first invert, so you’ll really want to make sure you have the technique down. That being said, when I started poling I bruised a lot when I was learning new moves. Nowadays I only get bruises if I accidentally bang a shin on the pole (which hurts btw!). So, it really depends. A video would be helpful so we could see what you’re doing 🙂

Thank you everyone =) I am having to kick a bit to get up so that makes sence I was wondering if that was why I do not have the lessions but perhaps I will get tthemeveryrhing I have taught myself the past year has mostly been from watching youtube tutorials. I have been doing the leg tucks( where I have strong grip on the pole and then bring my knees to my chest) which I can do controled I just dont quite have the abs for a full controlled lift =\ I will try and upload a video.

Getting the full controlled lift takes a while. At first I would swing my leg up to get momentum, not kick. My studio thought it was fine to swing when you are first learning until you build up the strength as the strength will come from inverting and practice. If I had to wait til I could lift to invert I think I would’ve given up from frustration haha!!
