This is one trick I am really struggling with. Which sucks because our studio uses it A LOT as base move. I can usually pick up tricks on the first few attempts, but this one has been stressing me out for about a year!!

So, I can do it, but i am faking it. I am only hanging on by my leg. I can’t get into my armpit at all, and inevitably, can’t get into a lot of other tricks without losing a great deal of height. A lot of the time I end up with the pole on my hip as well.

Can any of you lovelies offer some advice? Or point me in the direction of some tutorials. I will try to post a video when my little ones aren’t fighting me for my pole.

Good news…You don’t need to use the armpit!!!!! 😊 needing the assistance of the armpit is helpful for some beginning inverters.

Veena, I can’t really get my armpit in there either, but just recently I have been trying the Gemini/scorpio switch and feel like it is important that I use my armpit. Would you say the armpit is necessary for the switch?

I do suggest using the armpit in the gemini to scorpio switch when starting. However, the legs play the largest part in holding you on the pole. It IS important to use the armpit to catch yourself when doing spinning gemini to gemini and scorpio to scorpio!

If either of you are having a difficult time try posting a video for us to look at. This will allow me to see where your issue is. Could be placement or even flexibility.

Thanks Veena. I will try posting a video. I’ve never done that before and right now I’m in my jammies :), but maybe tomorrow. I have been having another issue with Gemini that I need to ask you about as well, so hopefully you’ll see what I mean in the video. But, I had an instructor who told me that after I invert and before I let go in gemini, I should reposition myself on the pole to make sure the pole is positioned correctly in my torso area. She told me that my hips should be level and parallel to the ground or the pole won’t sit right. Whereas, before I reposition myself, the hip closest to the pole is angled downward, especially after I reach up with the outside leg to grab on with the knee pit. Well, ever since I started repositioning myself, the pole sits on my lower back and I have been having pain there. This can’t be right!! Is it? If you don’t understand what I mean, I’ll just wait till I post my video and I ‘ll show you both with and without repositioning. Thanks 🙂

It’s good if you can get the hips level but you shouldn’t be in a position where the lower back is on the pole. This is how the Gemini should look, the pole is in between the ribs (not on) and above the hip bone.

From a regular invert, try pulling up on the pole a little with your arms so that your torso is in a bit of an ab crunch position before trying to hook your outside leg. That seems to help students get the right hook. I hope I’m explaining this clearly? 🙂
