In the scorpio (inside leg hang) my inside leg contacts the pole at the upper inner thigh, and at the lower outer calf right near my ankle.  I have also seen people do this move with it closer to the knee though.  I think everyone finds it more stable or more comfortable in slightly different positions.

i like the look of the "long" or extended scorprio with the pole closer to the knee and a straighter leg, but for many transitions (spinning scorpio, for example) the pole should be lower down on the thigh with a very bent knee (like a gemini) for security/stability.

I tend to fully extend my inner leg, so the pole is pressed against my upper inner thigh (near groin) and the outside of my ankle. Sometimes I feel more pressure on my ankle and foot pressed against pole. I think scorpio looks great both ways, long straight legs or bent legs on a sharp angle. If I bend my inner leg sharply then my outer leg I also bend so that I can bring my foot to the side of my head. If my inner leg is extended fully along the pole then I reach back and grab my outer foot, bringing it down towards the floor in a closed scorpio (or upside down back mount). To make sure your torso is angled correctly to the pole, make sure the pole is pressing against the inside of you inner hip bone. You know that concave area between your belly button and  hip bone? Thats where my skin grips pole also.

Great! Thanks everybody… i’m still trying to find the right placement that feels most secure and also not insanely painfull. i cant tell if it hurts bc of bad placement or just normal pole burn that goes away with practice

In my experience, the Scorpio pain goes away when you a.) get the placement right, but also b.) you practice the hell out of it sort of just progressively get that thigh area used to the pain.

Make sure you're engaging the right muscles, too. For me the inside leg hang hurt a lot less once I stopped relying on skin and figured out that I had muscles I could put to use lol. Oh, and when I fully got into position and allowed my free leg to extend, it arched my back, which put me in a much better and much less painful position.

My placement is extended as others have described, so I'm engaging inner thigh and hip flexor to help take some of the pressure off my inner thigh skin, and I'm actively trying to prrrrrress the outside of my calf/ankle/knee into the pole.

ok GREAT advice everyone… arching the back and reaching for the outside leg really mad a world of difference.  i feel secure and even tho i feel the pole burn, i dont feel as much pain as before.  before i was probably not lined up in the best position.  i am seriously grateful you guys… thanks so much. Now I can practice the switcheroo!

My trouble with this move is getting the pole in the right place on the torso, i feel this is key.

I know it's late but here is the Scorpio lesson, I cover both the long and short scorpio. https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4cc1bbf3-c948-45a7-9148-7a290ac37250

Here is the scorpio to gemini switch lesson as well. https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4ce15e37-17d0-4712-8af4-6c7b0ac37250https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

thanks veena!  when i had your lessons i watched this lesson but still experienced difficulty with correct placement.  I believe the problem i had was that i was trying to keep my spine perpendicular to the floor and also parallel and next to the pole, when it seems to be more comfortable when the pole crosses the center of the back at an subtle angle?  I dont recall you mentioning this in the lesson- BUT it's been awhile since i saw it and you may have mentioned it and i just didn't hear.  also- maybe scorpio is just different for everybody because we all have different bodies.

I do talk about opening up at the hips in the lesson. Depending on when you had the lessons it may have been an old one. We are now on our third generation of lessons 🙂

I was wondering what i am doing wrong on the short leg scorpio.. It kills the outside of my lower leg. Is there any placement on the outside of the lower leg that is preferable?

I'm just seeing your question now pegasusaerialfitness….I'm sure pole diameter and leg length along with bone structure all determine how painful a Scorpio, and other moves are. I personally don't feel pain on the lower leg in Scorpio. I would think the "in between" position might hurt the most, meaning not quite a long but not quite short Scorpio. I REALLY bend the knee when I do a short Scorpio, almost as if to do a thigh hold.

TK Veena..I will work on really bending my leg for the short scorpio
